Gibson Mill
The end of our walk: Gibson Mill now undergoing restoration

HARDCASTLE CRAGS

This walk provides easy access to a narrow steep-sided wooded valley, sometimes called Little Switzerland which gets its name from the millstone grit stacks looming above the valley down which the Hebden Water flows through semi-natural woodland past Gibson Mill. PLUS PHOTOGALLERY.

Famous for the giant anthills built by the rare northern hairy wood ant and its show of bluebells as well as 500 species of fungi. Birds include all three British woodpeckers, dippers, kingfishers, herons, grey and pied wagtails, tawny owls, barn owls and little owls; buzzards and pied flycatchers are occasional visitors. Fauna includes seven out of Britain's eight bat species, roe deer and badgers.

Getting there:
By bus:
Catch the Hebden Bridge Service H to car park. Daily regular service to main entrance (start point). Check the timetable for further details: tel: 0113 245 7676 or click here for online.
Information: The buses on this route are not wheelchair friendly but people unable to use the service bus should contact West Yorkshire Metro for advice about using Access buses: tel: 0113 348 1900. Toilets are not open on weekdays in winter but the restored Gibson Mill will open in 2005 with a cafe, a disabled toilet and baby-changing facilities.
By car: Drive to start point, (see map) room for up to 100 cars in the car park (charge). There are three free parking bays for people with disabilities. The National Trust request that visitors be enviromentally friendly by walking, cycling or using the bus to get here where possible.
Walk conditions
The path is both wheelchair and pushchair friendly but wheelchair-users will not be able to go beyond Gibson Mill. The track is undulating, ascending and descending no more than 100 feet over the length of the walk but wheelchair users may require assistance, especially when returning to the start of the walk.
