FACTS

Champion Jack was born William Thomas Dupree in New Orleans.

Dupree was raised in the same New Orleans children's home as jazz idol Louis Amstrong.

Champion Jack Dupree was born in 1909 (although there are other slightly conflicting birthdates suggested) in New Orleans, America.

He died, a famous blues pianist and singer, in 1992 in Germany.

Yet amazingly in his busy life he also found time to live in Ovenden, raise a family and introduce West Yorkshire to his infectious brand of music.

He lived in West Yorkshire during the 1970s and 1980s.

Introducing West Yorkshire to Champion Jack Dupree's music

Nicknamed 'Champion Jack' following his boxing success, he moved to Europe in the 1950's to escape racism in his native USA.

There is currently no permanent recognition in Halifax of his contribution to the local music scene.

Now a fund-raising concert aims to set that right by providing a bronze memorial.

Barry Rutter, of the Northern Broadsides theatre company, will be the master of ceremonies at the concert held in Dean Clough.

"I was aware that Champion Jack Dupree had lived in Halifax. When I heard a BBC Radio 4 documentary it filled in more of the details.

"It's a local story and we've sold out 300 seats.

"I've always loved the blues and already had a Champion Jack Dupree CD but now I've got lots of them to enjoy."

To mark the story a local sculptor, Ian Judd, has been commissioned to produce a bronze of the musician for Dean Clough.
