Hill, your Question and Answer session starts now...
How
did you get into the job?
I was
on a YTS scheme working in a shop, when my friend's sister who worked
in a printers, said they needed an assistant. I managed to swap
my placement to the printers and worked there for 2 years where
I did typesetting, platemaking & printing and really loved it.
After that I got a job as a junior designer at a print shop and
went on to work for various printers, mail order and an advertising
agency before turning freelance.
What
is the job about?
The
job entails going to see clients, finding out their requirements
and then creating a design of a brochure, logo, advert or website,
in fact anything that can be printed or viewed on the web. I may
draw up a few ideas for them to choose from and recommend other
marketing strategies. All my work is done on an Apple Macintosh
computer which is my pride and joy.
What
are the best and worst things about your job?
The
best thing is meeting new people, my clients are very varied in
trade, I must have met everyone from business consultants to polystyrene
manufacturers and have clients in Switzerland and America. Also,
I love the chance to be really creative and just create whatever
mad ideas come into my head.
The
worst is the mundane stuff like company reports and accounts and
typesetting financial literature where there are lots of fractions.
Have
you had any embarrassing moments or have you got any funny stories
tell?
Well,
everything you see in print has to be created somewhere so I have
done designs for everything from condom machines to 0898 adverts!
If
you weren't doing this job what would you be doing?
An
interior designer or fashion designer.
Have
you got any heroes in your field of work?
I
admire all women in business, but one in particular is Judith Donovan
who built a great direct marketing empire when it was very rare
for women to have their own businesses.
What
advice would you give to someone who wants to work in your field?
Go
to college, learn as much as you can and don't have high expectations
of the job - it's not all drawing pretty pictures, there is a lot
of boring stuff which requires no creative input but it has to be
done.
Lindsey
is managing director of Apperley Design
