A
Bradford business woman who runs her own PR company decided to adopt
after her attempts at fertility treatment failed. This is her story... |

"We
went through the normal procedures to adopt, getting in contact with
social services in Bradford when fertility treatment failed.
The Telegraph and Argus had a front page splash about adopting with
a plea to hear from potential adopters. We went to the library where
we met social services for a chat.
We were assigned a social worker with whom we had a series of meetings,
about once a fortnight for two months. They lasted a couple of hours
each.
The process of adoption is an imperfect one, but I don't know how
they could really improve it. The thought that it could break down
for children who have already had a traumatic start in life is awful.
People who want to adopt need to be able to cope with the difficulties.
After we were passed to adopt it was about six months until we got
our two boys. They are now seven and five, but when we first got them
they were rising five and three. We first spent an hour for them,
then they spent an afternoon with us, then stayed the weekend. Towards
the end of the process the boys were asking: "When we are going
to live with you all night and all day."
In the first week they stayed with us it dawned on me what a huge
responsibility the social workers had in matching up children and
parents.
We didn't think we would get very far with adopting as we were a bit
older than most people going through the adoption process, but Bradford
has a lot of children which need adopting.
They have a half brother and sister who they see several times a year.
If they did decide to get in touch with their birth mother or father
we wouldn't mind. We have always been very open with them about their
adoption and that we couldn't have a baby because of my tubes not
working properly.
The boys are now doing very well at school, in their swimming classes
and they keep us on our toes. Working in business both me and my husband
are extremely focused but having the boys helps us be more relaxed."
