most famous literary families. But who ACTUALLY were these sisters
from Haworth who had such short lives, but such a big impact..? These
are the facts! |

Charlotte
Bronte 1816-1855

1816 Born, Thornton, Yorkshire
1824 Joins sisters Maria and Elizabeth at school for
the daughters of clergy at Cowan Bridge, near Kirkby Lonsdale
1825 Charlotte and Emily taken away from the school.
At home, sisters and Branwell create and write about imaginary
world of 'Angria'
1831 Goes to Miss Wooler's School at Roe Head, Mirfield
1832 Returns home and teaches her sisters
1835 Goes back to Roe Head as a teacher
1838 Leaves Roe Head
1839 Governess at Stonegappe in Lothersdale but leaves
two months later
1841 Governess at Upperwood House, Rawdon; leaves eight
months later 1842 Charlotte and Emily enrol at the Pensionnat
Heger in Brussels to study French and German
1844 Charlotte returns home from Brussels
1845 Arthur Nicholls appointed curate of Haworth
1846 POEMS by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell published
1846 Completes THE PROFESSOR but does not find
a publisher
1847 JANE EYRE published
1849 SHIRLEY published
After Anne's death, makes several visits to different parts
of the country meeting some of the literary figures of the
time
1852 Mr Nicholls first proposes marriage
1853 VILETTE published
1854 Marries Mr Nicholls
1855 Dies in early stages of pregnancy
1857 Mrs Gaskell's THE LIFE OF CHARLOTTE BRONTE

At home, the sisters and Branwell create and write about imaginary
world of 'Angria'. Emily and Anne invent Kingdom of 'Gondal'
after Charlotte leaves for Roe Head
1835 Pupil at Roe Head, but returns home after six
months
1838 Teaches for six months at Miss Patchett's School
at Law Hill near Halifax
1842 Charlotte and Emily enrol at the Pensionnat Heger
in Brussels to study French and German
1842 Returns home on death of aunt and takes on role
of housekeeper
1846 POEMS by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell
published
1847 Wuthering Heights published December 19th
1848 Emily dies from tuberculosis and is buried in
Haworth

1815 Becomes Rector of Thornhill
1820 Becomes Rector of Haworth
1821 Mrs Bronte dies and is buried in Haworth; Aunt
(Elizabeth) Branwell moves in with family
1842 Aunt Branwell dies
1845 Arthur Nicholls appointed curate of Haworth
1852 Mr Nicholls first proposes marriage to Charlotte
1854 Removes his objections to the marriage of Mr Nicholls
and Charlotte
1861 Dies; Mr Nicholls returns to Ireland.

1845 Dismissed from Thorp Green, allegedly following
a love affair with Mrs Robinson, the lady of the house
1848 Dies from consumption and is buried in Haworth
