Bradford's Big Screen

Opera Singer in Centenary Square, Bradford
Opera comes to Centenary Square!

Bradford joins the singalong!

If you ever thought opera was boring, think again! If you've never even THOUGHT of going to the opera before, think again! Bradford's Big Screen is the place to be to find out all about it - and it's all FREE! Oh, and you can join in too...

Whether you're a first time opera-goer or a seasoned fan, you'll able to join people from all over Britain on Friday 7th July in a nationwide singalong! Three tenors from The Royal Opera will be revelling in World Cup fever while teaching the famous football anthem Nessun Dorma - from Puccini's Turandot - to the crowds in Covent Garden Piazza. If you remember, Nessun Dorma achieved pop status after Luciano Pavarotti's rendition of it was used as the theme for the 1990 World Cup and has since then become the tenor's signature song for many people outside Italy. It's often used as the soundtrack of many television shows and movies, particularly those associated with football.

This operatic warm-up will be broadcast from 6.50pm as it happens to Bradford's Big Screen audience before the main event, when Turandot itself is beamed LIVE from London from, with opera fans in Centenary Square ready to join in when the aria is sung during the performance! Turandot is a glorious pageant of colour and action portraying a world of Oriental fantasy. It's the third of the Summer Big Screen performances for 2006 and will be relayed to 12 venues across the country from Aberdeen to Belfast to Lake Windermere - and, of course, Bradford! - to an estimated audience of more than 25,000. And remember, not only is Friday 7th July the night if you want to get a good dose of a top opera, it's also the night you can enjoy it FREE of charge.

Just get down to the Big Screen in Centenary Square, Bradford for 6.10pm and let it all reveal itself in front of you! BBC Radio Leeds' breakfast presenter Andrew Edwards will be introducing the event with a half hour of entertainment from a couple of stilt walkers who will be moving among the opera lovers as they assemble.

Friday's performance is just one of a load of different events being shown on the Big Screen in Bradford during Summer 2006. There's already been ballet and the World Cup - two more different events it'd be difficult to think of! - and there's more to come, including continuing coverage of the country's fave tennis event, Wimbledon. Bradford's Centenary Square is our very own Henman Hill or Murray Mound for the tournament.

That includes regularly updated City Diary listings, the weather forecast, and a 'ticker' showing all the latest news and sport. The Screen promises to have something for you!

So, whether you're a culture vulture, a tennis fiend or just someone who wants to know a bit more about what's happening in your own city, why not make it BIG in Bradford Centenary Square this Summer at the Big Screen?
