MELTHAM TOO STRONG FOR HOLMFIRTH IN CUP REPLAY

U13 Cup replay: Meltham 286 for 3,  Holmfirth 228 for 5

Holmfirth U13s have crashed out of the Cup  to a good Meltham side who showed their intentions right from the start of the match.

"Heppenstall was the pick of the Holmfirth bowlers on a day when they were not at their best"
Simon Cave

Returning Holmfirth skipper Elliot Drummond won the toss and put the home side in, on the first grass wicket either side had seen this season. Meltham's opener Josh Dixon punished some wayward bowling by John Cave, striking four boundaries in the very first over to get his side off to a flying start. His partner William Frayne was also able to score freely, this first pair contributing 34, and importantly losing no wickets, as Holmfirth's bowlers struggled to find their line and length.

Holmfirth managed to put the brakes on in the middle of the innings, with Molson being well run out by Cave, but a fine flourish by the last pair pushed Meltham to an impressive total, Elliot Duczenko top scoring with 30, and Wallace adding six runs. Heppenstall was the pick of the Holmfirth bowlers on a day when they were not at their best.

Holmfirth's reply started well, with John Cave leading the way with an aggressive unbeaten 19, including a big six into the ajoining field. He was supported by Alex Palmer, who was also unbeaten on nine. Unfortunately, the second pairing of Elliot Drummond and Phillip Warrender got bogged down by some tight bowling and field placing, and all momentum to the innings was lost. Heppenstall and Paul Tibbenham fried to move the score along, but the ask was too much by the time the last pair of George Sugden and Jack Brook came to the wicket.  Sugden flung the bat, knocking a quick fire 12, but at the cost of wickets, and it was Meltham who deservedly progressed through to play Scholes in the next round.
