This
360 is off the castle ruins.
Pontefract
Castle provides a quiet retreat in the town centre but
it was not always so peaceful.
Reduced to ruins in 1649 because it supported the losing
side in the English Civil War it was once a royal castle.
King Richard II died here, possibly murdered by Henry
Bolinbroke who had siezed the throne.
Today there is a visitors' centre on site (entry is
free) and there are tours of the underground magazine
(fee payable). There is also a working blacksmith onsite.
