Forests Return
c.10,500 Years Ago
Sluggan contains a continuous record from about 13,000 years ago to the late twentieth century.
As Emily Murray shows in this clip, bogs are invaluable as records of past climates as reflected in the layers of soil types beneath them.
Furthermore, research on the pollens in the bog, from base to top, has yielded a complete history of the plant colonization of the surrounding area for the last 13,000 years.
Recently, pioneering research at Sluggan was able both to detect volcanic dust and to establish accurate dates for the volcanic events they represent.
