The Rise of Belfast

c.150 years ago

Presenter Caroline Nolan and archaeologist Ruairi O' Baoill visit Waring Street in Belfast, which is part of the oldest area of the city.

They trace Belfast's development from when it first took shape in the 17th century through the massive population growth which followed the industrial revolution of the 19th century.

The past is ever present in today's city and in the names given to some of its newest premises.

One of the very first success stories of Belfast's industrialisation was a pottery which made products which were exported all over the world.

And the remains of the terraces where the potters lived now forms the foundation of The Pot House in Waring Street.

Alas, archaeologists have not yet found the remains of the pottery, though that's not to say they haven't been trying...
