The Great Melt

c.18,000 Years Ago

At the end of the ice age skyscraper-high ice sheets began to thaw releasing a deluge of meltwater along with the silt and sand they had accumulated over many years.

These deposits would eventually form a muddy clay known as sleech.

To this day, buildings in central Belfast need deep foundations if they are to avoid an Albert-style tip.

A nod back through time to the end of the ice age.
