The 18 writers who progressed to the 'longlist' stage in the sifting process and beyond, including the final 6 sent to the judges, are coming along to the Scotland Writes masterclass this week in Glasgow (snow permitting). So if you haven't already heard from us about this event, then unfortunately it means you haven't made it through to this stage in the competition. But congratulations to the writers who did make it through.

Any chance of doing a blog on why you chose those scripts, and why the other scripts failed?

JonR - We chose scripts that did something unusual and original. We chose scripts that had a really authentic sense of contemporary Scotland and Scottishness about them. We chose scripts with strong characters and bold ideas/worlds. We chose scripts that made us laugh and made us scared. We chose scripts that told us that the writer has the potential to write for television. We chose raw scripts that grabbed us and polished scripts that were smartly handled. The scripts that didn't make it through just didn't manage to do any or enough of these things as well as the ones that did. What we did notice was that the general standard was high. But also that a lot of writers struggled to get the story going straight away and with really strong, unusual, engaging characters driving them forward.

Please could you update us on the winning entries for the Scotland Writes TV drama competition. Are any being developed for future production? Are any of the winning writers now writing for other BBC shows?
