This year's Tony Doyle Bursary for New Writing - supported by us here at the BBC writersroom - is now open for entries, so if you're an Irish writer by birth or residence you should make your way over to our opportunities page and check it out.

The Tony Doyle Bursary is a fantastic stepping-stone for new writers which has launched several careers, so well worth a look.

    Hi Piers,
I submitted a screenplay to the BBC writersroom earlier this year and received very encouraging notes and an invitation to submit my next work. However, as my next work is still “under construction” (won’t be ready by Dec 5th deadline) can I resubmit the same piece of writing for the Tony Doyle Bursary competition even though WR have read it already? I’m Irish so I’d love a chance at this competition.
Also, the screenplay in question is about 104 pages. Would this length disqualify it?
Last question; is it mostly professional writers with agents who have the best chance at gaining a place on the Northern Ireland residential?
    Any advice?
    Many thanks.

    Hi Forex36

The Tony Doyle bursary is a completely separate entity from our unsolicited script system, so it's absolutely fine to send the same script in.

I've just had a quick look at the rules and it does state specifically that they're looking for 60 or 90 minute scripts - so I'd suggest doing another draft before the deadline to fit it to the length they're asking for.

Finally, the Tony Doyle Bursary is looking for new writers; so I don't think having an agent would affect your chances of getting on the residential.

Oh no! I've already sent it in! Eager beaver that I am. Oh well, I'll just have to hope for the best. It's only a couple of pages over and I can always redraft later (which is actually one of their rules) Thanks for the response Piers.
