Writers Academy 11
Entries pouring in from all directions here too. Well, we've had about 60... plus a couple of hundred started but not submitted yet. About the same as last year at the same stage. There's been a few queries about file formats. The BBC office (no, I don't print them all out myself) that deals with these applications have asked for text files - probably because they've got to print out 500 odd scripts, and lots of different file formats would drive them insane. Might try and get them to allow Final Draft next year, if that's what most people work on?
Make sure you have uploaded your writing sample when you submit your application. I'm told we've had a few sent through with no scripts attached. I'll try and chase a few of these and let them know.
12 days to go....

PDF files are fine - no Final Draft

Just wanted to say congratulations to Abi Morgan and team for their BAFTA last night for 'White Girl'. Brilliant script (you can read it here in the script archive) and well deserved award. Well done everyone and hopefully this will be hugely encouraging to all here, either those fortunate enough to be chosen for the Writers Academy or those still plugging away.

Does the writing sample have to be a script? I was thinking of sending a short story
Complain about this comment
I think the problem with people not attaching scripts might have arisen because when you submit, you are only prompted to attach two docs - once you've added your CV and proof of a commission, there's no room for your writing sample. I had the same thing last year - or maybe it's just me and my mac?

@ lionpascoe
It does have to be a script, no prose please.
@ geminivivyoung
You don't need to attach your CV - that is asked for in the body of the application form, so the two docs should be proof of commission, plus script.

Can a CV count as proof of commission? If it quotes work for the BBC?
Complain about this comment
Hi Brucewriter,
No - you need to submit written proof from the broadcaster/company/agent etc that has paid you.

Hi Ceri,
when you say "writers will spend 12 weeks on each show" does this mean that you will be based where the shows are produced?
thanks.

Hi Ceri
Sorry to go off-topic but do you know if the shortlist for the Alfred Bradbury Bursary Award has been decided yet, and if so have the people on the shortlist been informed?
Thanks

Hi Martyn,
Sorry - not something I know anything about.

@ hoffus
No not literally. You'll be required to attend a few meetings, but will do the actual writing from where you usually work. Like any other freelance writer writing for the show.

Looking at the application form. Would 'Employment' be the place to put previous writing commissions or is the expectation that that should go in the answers to the 'Application Questions'? Doesn't seem to sit quite naturally in either.

@ ianzpotter
List commissions under 'employment' and anything that doesn't seem right there, put it in the later answers.

A stoopid question - Closing date for applications is 5th May. That means I can finally press SEND at five minutes to midnight on 5th May itself, yes???
(Not that I would do that, of course....)

@ Bingethink
Yes - the deadline is midnight on 5th May

Hi Ceri,
I'd really like to apply to the Academy but I'm not sure I can qualify re: professional credit. I have wrote and directed a number of short films one of which was edited by a professional production company becasue they liked the script I wrote. However, they didn't pay me for the script as such but rather offered to edit the film if they could use it on their reel. So, while I've written a professionally produced film (ie: not a student film) I haven't received monetary payment for it. Anyway, I could provide a link to the film on youtube so the BBC could see that it's a professional production.
I have a strong writing piece ready to submit and would really really like a chance to apply to the academy.
Do you think this film would be enough to qualify?
Thanks.

@ dreamer73
No - I'm afraid that wouldn't qualify. Sorry.

I was a winner of the 2009 Royal Exchange Bruntwood Competition and my play is going to be produced by the Exchange sometime in the near future. I'm just wondering if I qualify for entry?

@ cheeryjteale
Yes - if you can supply a letter from them saying that.

Would co-writing the ResonanceFM Twitter Play for radio qualify for Writers Academy? Thinking next year rather than this.

@Antoniablue
No it wouldn't I'm afraid, as it's unpaid.
@lorddaffyduck
I'll discuss this in more detail on my next entry. We don't do it to be mean, but to make sure we're absolutely positive we've looked at everyone's entry carefully enough. I will make sure we let everyone know at the earliest opportunity. Cross my heart.

re: lorddaffyduck & abba
if you haven't heard from charlotte by now then unfortunately you probably haven't made the abba short-list, do understand the desire, but i don't think you are being kept on false hope, the rules clearly said;
Shortlisted plays will be notified by the end of April 2009
Winner/s will be notified by the end of May 2009
Also the short list is shorter this year, from more entries, so statistically even tougher, not that it makes any difference, i think if you have got something then eventually someone will notice. just gotta keep putting it on show.

I see that the short list for the abba has been announced, and asume that as I haven't been contacted, didn't even reach the long list stage (this time!). I did send a stamped address postcard to confirm receipt of entry and a SAE for the return of my script, but have received neither back. Does this mean my entry was not received, or will the scripts be sent back shortly?
