Bits and Bobs - Tony Doyle, Radio Comedy Scripts

Post categories:

Piers Beckley | 17:24 UK time, Thursday, 2 April 2009

The winner of this year's Tony Doyle Bursary for New Writing, which was supported by the BBC writersroom, is Martin McNamara for his screenplay Sworn Virgin. The runners up were Stacey Gregg, Alan Blythe and Deirdre Kinahan.

We have two new radio comedy scripts up in the Script Archive. They're both by Dan Robins and Danny Tetsell, and come from a series called Paperback Hell.

Black Teeth Lane
Forbidden Fire

We interviewed Danny last year together with Lenny Henry about the show that Danny and Dan wrote for Lenny to star in, Rudy's Rare Records.

    We've never put any sketches up in the Script Archive because we don't look at them here. So it would be a bit odd to put up radio sketches and then say "But please don't bother sending us any."

    If you have a read of the comments section of this blog post we did for 7 on 7, then there's various bits of sketch-writing advice including links.

    BBC Cue Style (which you can find on our script formats page) is the best format to use for radio sketches.

    Piers, I don't think it would be odd at all to put radio sketches up. As you say, the writersroom was involved with 7 on 7 promoting it, passing on sketches (if not reading them) plus that great interview (which has 404ed).

    Which reminds me, is it possible to have printer friendly versions of the writersroom articles as the 7 on 7 one printed off two blank pages for every page *and* missed off the bottom of each page. If not then a "all on one page" option will do. Cheers.

    I meant your link above has 404ed not the interview page itself.

    @Piers,

    A couple of years ago, the 'old' writersroom message board did have a link to a couple of sample radio sketches for a R4 comedy show called 'Bearded Ladies', which was then asking for contributions from new comedy sketch writers.

    Just a thought but that link may still be out there somewhere within easy reach. I'd also welcome some sample sketches from shows like Punt and Dennis, Parsons and Naylor or archive sketches from the News Huddlines, if at all possible.

    Robin: All the links seem to be working as far as I can see... if you're still having a problem can you email me at writersroom@bbc.co.uk so I can investigate?

    MrsM: Ta, I'll have a poke around in the archive and see if I can find it.

    Piers, it's a Firefox thing, the site works fine in IE. Random HTML is leaking into links, it looks like. Even your mailto hasn't worked in Firefox.
