The Wire

Post categories:

Piers Beckley | 14:21 UK time, Monday, 30 March 2009

For those that haven't yet seen it, The Wire is coming to BBC2 tonight at 11:20pm.

(Not the Radio 3 series, for those who were wondering. This is the American drama series set in Baltimore.)

Series creator David Simon came from a journalistic background originally. There's an excellent interview with him in the Guardian to tie in with the showing.

Robin Kelly has more links to interviews on his blog, and you can also listen to a piece from this morning's Today programme featuring star Dominic West on the BBC iPlayer.

The show's going to be stripped five nights a week on BBC2, so set your PVRs.

My own opinion: It's bloody marvellous.

Word of warning - it took me three or four episodes to get used to the style, which is very dense. Some people I know even switch the subtitles on in order to decode the accents.

After the first episode, I still wasn't certain, but was intrigued enough to want to watch more. After another few episodes, I knew I was in for the duration.

I can tell you what caused me to sign up, too. It's the scene where Bunk and McNulty discuss a case using a very limited vocabulary.

You'll know it when you see it. :)

If anyone does want to talk The Wire, can we please stay spoilers-free in the comments here, so that new people can enjoy it as it airs. Thanks!

Piers, that's the best scene ever. It's a must for any writer.

Have watched four episodes (have a box set) and am hooked.

Will they be showing the second series after, or soon after, or should one simply buy it?

They're going to be running all five series one after the other, so if you want to save a bit of cash don't worry about the box sets.

Box sets do have commentary, mind.

Unfortunately as it's an acquisition, we couldn't get iPlayer rights.

This is the exact scene where I fell in love with the series. I was already enjoying it, but that scene is just something special.
