Survivors

Piers Beckley | 12:25 PM, Thursday, 20 November 2008

A new series of Survivors starts this Sunday on BBC1.

Based on the novel by Terry Nation (which was, itself, based on the 70s TV series also created by Nation), Survivors is the story of the few who live after a virus kills most of the people on Earth.

(That's not really a spoiler... the clue's in the title.)

Anyways, we've got an interview with series recreator Adrian Hodges just up on the website.

You might also want to check out our earlier interview with Gaby Chiappe, where she talks about writing for the series.

And on Monday, we'll be putting up the script for the first episode. So if you want to read along as you watch to find out the difference between script and screen, either record the episode on Sunday, or check it out on iPlayer, where it'll be available for seven days after broadcast.

Survivors - not one survivor over forty. It's just not credible that out of a population of some sixty million all of the survivors will be attractive and on average 30. Even the Minister looked like she was barely out of uni. And out of our little band of brothers we are very well represented by minority groups, including the psychopathic group... My heart sank.
And all meeting up on the same spot on the same stretch of motorway...?
Apocalyptic series are truly fascinating and should be treated with respect. Try The Last Train - 6 episodes of excellent well written and characterised drama (ITV 1999), or, indeed, the original Survivors...
This version felt a bit like Bonekickers - too little thought and too much of the bl**ding obvious...

Having watched a collection of post apocalyptic series and films, Survivors 2008 was extremely disappointing. It appeared that it had been approached in a Dr Who/Casualty way and brought nothing new to the theme. It was full of inconsistencies, over stretching of credulity and weak story telling. There are still avenues of a Britain-after-most-of-the-population-has-gone to explore, but this programme chose to avoid any risks in it's conception and execution. An opportunity wasted by an organisation that should know better.

As a fan of the original survivors series I must say how disappointing the new series is.
The lethal bug that has hit this story is the only fatal virus ever to undergo diversity training. Why no Chinese women in th cast eh? Way to ruin a good story.
Secondly the script is banal and trite.
One out of ten for the intro.

The Last Train was, of course, written by Matthew Graham.

    Who created Bonekickers.

Terry Nation created Survivors. This is a copy of it.

Yes, Matthew Graham wrote The Last Train and yes he also co-created Bonekickers, and also co-created Life on Mars and also wrote for the fabulous This Life.

Which just goes to prove that no matter how good we may be some of the time, the rest of the time we're not quite as good as we think we are ...

But this is actually not a direct criticism of Mr Graham. I assume a great many other people were involved with this poor resurrection of what was a truly great series.

there seems a danger this will be not just a turkey but a reheated turkey.

let's hope they pick up the pace a bit and bring something new to the story in the remaining episodes - otherwise what was the point of remaking it.

as for diversity I think you will find the "bad guys" will be uniformly white - this is the BBC after all

I know the we are to supposed to empathise with the characters in the group and see them as the good guys and maybe vunerable compared to the drunken mobs toting shot guns, But really, if you were in a pharmacy, as a doctor, would you really just pick up a few antibiotics and leave the abundance of other medicines. You'd take a shed load.

Maybe the writers and producers want us to be totally frustrated with their lack of planning and inaction.

I rarely watch dramas but this is a subject that interests me so I decided to give it a go.

What a disappointment. The cast, some of whom even I recognise as being of the highest calibre, are sadly underused, with tired, seen-it-before-and-know-what?s-coming-next storylines and a roll-call of characters straight from the post-apocalyptic pic?n?mix.

After fidgeting through two episodes I simply cannot summon up sufficient interest to stick with it. It is, quite simply, boring.
