Sharps Shortlist

Post categories:

Paul Ashton | 12:45 UK time, Friday, 20 June 2008

We're still working flat-out on the Sharps submissions. We've now taken a look at every script that has been received and have been second- and third-reading those that have made it through to the next round. We will email today some writers who have been selected for the workshop on June 30th. Due to the huge range and quality of worked received, it is taking longer than we had hoped to make some final decisions - but we will have contacted all the workshop shortlist by 1pm next Monday (the 23rd).

Thanks, Paul. I am devising a chart, showing the ups and downs of my hope levels.

I was planning on peaking sometime between 3-5 this afternoon, with sharp fall after 5:30, but maintaining a millimetre of hope up until 7:00, or so, in case you all sometimes work late.

Now I know to put hope-bulge in between 9:00 and 1:00 on Monday the 23rd.

I haven't even had e mail confirmation yet. They've probably used mine to make firelighters or something.

There is no reason I can see why there couldn't be an on-line system based on the script registration number where you could track your submission and see the progress of your script.

If my script got dumped at the 10-page stage, I'd know by now, and if it made the longlist, I'd know that, too - we all would. It would put you out of your misery quickly if you failed, and add to the excitement if you knew you'd made it to another stage.

As the 'owner' of the registration number, you could be able to show or hide your name so others can see where you are, too.

@BBC - I'll write the system for free if you want :-)

I e mailed writersroom to say this was the case and have just got an 'out of office' reply e mail back.
I hope it's not lost. Turning that round in a month with a day job and three screaming kids, was no mean feat!

Maybe mine just never made it.

I hope and pray that on monday they find it has at least turned up, but why over ten days late. Has anyone else had theirs really not get there. Or am I just going to be the only one....

Has anyone any ideas on wht I should then do with my script, can i submit it elsewhere?
I have emailed them back asking please to keep their eye out for mine, but i just got the automated response :(
    Am very sad.

    Dave,

I would say use a recorded delivery method in future as these works are very precious. But hey, it didn't work for me, so errm, don't know what to suggest.
You could send it to Writersroom as a spec script as they accept them all year round - 10,000 get sent in per annum. I recently got some very helpful feedback from them on one of mine.
If my script has gone amiss, I will send it in again.....but work on it a bit first as 4 weeks was not enough for my clunky old brain.

Well I wish everyone goodluck and guess we'll have to wait till monday.
I thought that they wouldnt allow scripts to be sent in recorderd delivery, as most places dont allow it, because they can't afford someone to sit at the gate signing for letters all day. Maybe I was wrong to not use special, and just normal post, but I think they should say or not if the accept the above.

Really? I didn't know it wasn't allowed - I send everything recorded delivery as I don't trust the post. Perhaps that's been my undoing....mind you, it has been delivered, so some poor soul signed for it. Perhaps he then made it into a firelight to teach me a lesson.....
Having been to various BBC buildings as part of my day job, there are usually always people on reception. I think there has to be for security reasons. Oh God, I'm waffling on again.....

I find it odd that all of us appear to have sent in our scripts right on the deadline (i.e. sent on Fri 13 or sat 14 (in line with BBC's own brief that stated acceptance dated up to and including 14th was allowed) and we seem to be the ones receiving script not arrived etc.

I never said I had seen it anywhere that you couldnt post special delivery, i just thought that most places were to busy to recieve 500+ scripts like that.

This is my first script, but I've written other types of stuff, mainly for newspapers and magazines.

It's not so bad once you realise the judges/editors are morons who have no taste whatsoever, and should have been strangled at birth or before.

As opposed to the times you get accepted, when the judges/editors are insightful people of great taste and superb judgement who should really be canonised if there is any justice in the world.

Judges/editors are fickle creatures. Their clarity and foresight comes and goes so fast that sometimes you can submit two equally brilliant articles and one will get accepted but the other one doesn't.

The first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times before success on the 13th (maybe Friday *was* a lucky day) and the BBC rejected Fawlty Towers the first time it was submitted. They also rejected Father Ted, Drop the Dead Donkey and Red Dwarf. And every other prodco has done the same wit shows that went on to success.

It's still true - nobody really actually knows anything ... so keep believing ... if you watch TV, you know as much as anyone else :-)

Glad I found this blog and looking forward to Monday now, I had written this one off. I wasnt too dissapointed as I wrote it in 4 days, seeing the deadline too late, so its unlikely to be up to snuff. Its great to have something back out there though.

Just re-read my submission. Despite the fact that myself and several others repeatedly read and re-read the thing, I now typically notice that a character changes name ever so briefly and there's a rogue scene direction from when I had previously set a scene in a different (inside) location which now makes no sense at all!

This at least means that I wont be tense waiting up until 1pm anymore as I should think the writersroom are more interested in writers who can remember the names of their characters...
