A Reader Writes
A quick note from one of our script readers on Sharps...
"Thought I'd take a moment from reading the scripts that have made it through to a second round of reading to offer my thanks to all the writers who've made my job a pleasure so far.
I'm bowled over by the quality and confidence in the writing and the range of ideas that imaginatively stretch the parameters of the brief.
What's impressed me most of all is how writers have met the challenge of bringing shape, pace, and meaning to a satisfying story or episode within the tricky half-hour structure requested.
Well done to all who took up that challenge and made it this far.
Onward..."
So. Nice work, all!

You'd say that even if they were all rubbish!

please put some of the scripts up, after the date of emailing the lucky ones. I'd love to read some

Aspie: Nope. If they were all rubbish, we wouldn't say a thing.
Juggles: It's extremely unlikely that we'll do this, as it wouldn't be fair to the writers. But there's always the Script Archive for all your BBC scripty needs.

hi Piers, it'd be ok if you got the writer's permission, you can put mine up any day

I see this was posted at 2:52pm...I never received a receipt for mine until well after. Does this suggest mine never made a 2nd reading I wonder!?

I'm a little bit confused and frustrated. I have not received e-mail confirmation. Does this mean my script has not yet been passed on to a reader? Yet according to reader's comments they are already on second round of readings. And if I don't receive e-mail by 23rd, isn't it too late then as the successful 20 will be notified tomorrow (Fri) and my script wont have been read, nor will be. Nobody's going to chase up my script on Monday and read it when the finalists have already been chosen. Have the BBC given themselves enough time to sort through 600 scripts in 5 days? Reassurance please???

Fictionhed: No, there's no evidence one way or the other.
Oscar: This should answer your question too.
Imagine, if you will, a pile of scripts. One person goes through them logging them.
When they're logged, they get passed to a team of script readers. Based on the first ten pages, they either go into the thanks-but-no-thanks pile, or passed to a second round reader.
The second round reader then reads all of the scripts that have passed the sift, and makes a longlist. Everything on the longlist then gets passed to the judges.
Now, the thing is, all of these are happening simultaneously, so that we can get through the scripts as quickly as we can. So it's quite possible for one script to have been longlisted while another one hasn't yet been logged.
There's no quota for the longlist, so no need to worry about whether you were at the top or the bottom of the pile. Everything gets read.

I know we're all anxious to ensure our entries were received and properly read but if every last word from the writersroom folk is endlessly scrutinised and picked over I suspect they'll just shut up shop and not bother blogging any detail for fear of being held to account on every last nuance.
I think it's great that they posted the feedback from the reader - it's best insight many of us will get on how stiff the competition is. But I'm sure they won't continue to bother posting anything about the process if it turns into some kind of inquisition of every post.
Please keep posting about the process Piers - it's interesting even/especially for those of us who don't get though tomorrow.

It's great having this forum to post worries and fears and crazy dreams.
Did anyone else watch Coldplay outside TV centre on telly last night, thinking, 'Maybe I'm going there next week'?
Piers and everyone: this has been a great experience. It's kind of like a real-life writing assignment, in terms of having a deadline, time/page limit and theme.
And the prize was a huge motivation. The lucky 20 and 8 who get through are going to get a big boost to their careers, and that's great.
Writer's Room is a wonderful institution, and the Writer's Room blog is pretty cool too. Thanks.
Now, WHY HAVEN'T I RECIEVED MY CONFIRMATION EMAIL?????!!!!!
Just kidding. (really I'm not)

How come Michael hasn't blogged for a bit? It's not like he's got much else to do.

I haven't had my confirmation e mail either and my script arrived before lunchtime on Friday June 13th (confirmed by Royal Mail - always use special delivery in these cases).
Can imagine the scenario now - it will arrive on Friday and on seeing an e mail from writersroom, I will be leaping around my office, thinking that I'm a winner.....only to find that it's my confirmation.
Then again, if it doesn't come, there'll be no point e mailing in on the Monday.
Anyway, who cares? Never in a million years did I think I could turn out a script in four weeks, yet I did. Might not be my best work yet, but I came up with a story and met the deadline. Onwards and forwards.....
And I agree, general feedback from Piers is great....bit peeved to find there are so many brilliant people out there though.

Well, it is now 3:18 and I still haven't received my confirmation. However, as mine was probably the last to get there (posted it Saturday morning) I'm not surprised...

Hello? is there anybody alive in here? It has gone exceptionally quiet in here.
20th June is (according to today's news) is meant to be happiest day of the year. Now for 20 of us that may well come true but as I still haven't received any e-mail confirmation I'm starting to think I haven't a hope in hell of it being me.
