Sharps

Piers Beckley | 14:41 PM, Monday, 19 May 2008

As you may already be aware, Sharps is the BBC writersroom open call for new writing talent. There's a £500 bursary, a residential training scheme, and BBC mentoring available for the best scripts on the theme of "The Nation's Health".

You might be working on your entry already. Or perhaps you're already done and chafing at the bit to send it in.

Well, the online application form is now live. So as soon as your script's done, you can send it to us.

The deadline's not till June 16th, though. Why not take the opportunity to look it over one more time, and write another draft before sending it in? See how you can make it just a little bit better?

Sorry to be a bore with a technical question but the on-line application form seems to be playing up - at least it is for me!

It keeps telling me there's an error in my details - though nothing's marked in red and I've corrected them like a zillion times!

Is it just me it doesn't like or am I doing something wrong - eg is there a word limit on the sections where you write your own material?

Help - time is running out to get the script in the post.

    Thanks, Debbo

    Piers,

Just a quick question, but why is necessary to indicate our age next to our submission? We crinklies just get a tad edgy when asked to reveal our seniority for fear of our submission being directed immediatley to the rejection pile.

Debbo: Someone else had this problem, and it was due to the software which deals with applications not liking rude words.

I'll try and get this fixed when I'm next in the office, but if you want to get your application in now, have a quick look to see if there are any swearwords in the application form, and edit them out if there are.

Everyone can swear as much as they like in their scripts.

Kroggy: We need to ask for your age to make sure all applicants are over 18, as the eight final writers will attend a week-long residential course.

    Hi Piers,

Will we receive any acknowledgement of receipt of our scripts?

But, that said, why don't you ask ifthe submitter is over 18 years of age ? It would soon be obvious if they weren't.

Kroggy: We're using a back-end script previously developed by a different part of the BBC rather than developing our own, and that's the way it was built. The end result's the same. Think of it as your licence fee going towards programmes instead of programmers. :)

We certainly won't reject anyone over 18 because of their age.

Melchie: I'm out of the office for the rest of the week so I can't check this for you immediately - I'll see if one of the other writersroom people can answer, otherwise I'll find out for you on Monday.

Then all that is necessary, is to ask....'are you over 18?'

    Not... 'put your birthdate'

Melchie: We'll be emailing everyone whose script we receive this week a confirmation that it's arrived safely.

If you've posted your script already and haven't heard back by Thursday, drop us a line at writersroom@bbc.co.uk so we can check it's got here safely.
