It's the oil, stupid ...

Post categories:

Robin Lustig | 11:01 UK time, Tuesday, 8 September 2009

Are you still puzzled about why the UK and Scottish governments seemed
so keen to find a way to keep Libya's Colonel Muammar Gaddafi happy?

Do you sometimes wonder what kind of life you'd have if you had no
access to oil or gas?

In which case, I recommend this piece by Gideon Rachman of the Financial Times.

Bad luck for the three Islamic terrorists just convicted in Britain of plotting to blow up airplanes that Pakistan doesn't have any oil. If it had, they'd likely already be serving out their "sentences" in the best hotels and restaurants in Pakistan after a hero's welcome even though they are not Pakistanis and their crime was not committed in Pakistan.

It came as no surprise to me that the British government sold out America for short term material gain. When it comes to duplicity and betrayal of those it calls allies, the French have nothing on Britain. They just find more opportunities and aren't as sneaky about it.

There is of course also the viewpoint that Megrahi was innocent. e.g. See this article by award winning journalist John Pilger.

If the BBC needs to sensor out the web link, just look for "Megrahi was framed" on the Newstatesman site.

Why are people surprised? Predictions for use of oil and amounts available have been known for some time. The political power of oil has made sure that alternatives were not sought. Big business continuely sell nations out for short term profits and the governments keep returning for more abuse. If people keep electing spineless, corrupt politicians, this is what you will get. The balance no longer exist between the national interest and the commercial interest, the commerical interest have too much power and have no loyalties or concerns for nations or people. Bankers, oil, coal will kill the goose before giving up a single golden egg. Greed has killed captialism since private wealth has realized that governments will simply underwrite any risk with taxpayers moneies there is no incentives for them to change and captialism becomes an outdated model with what was once private enterprise now has obtained the right to indirectly tax.
