Black Stars in the quarter finals!

Ghana fans pour on to Acre Lane, Brixton, London, UK, moments after the final whistle ...This was the end of my night out watching the football last night - an eruption of joy in South London as Ghana beat the USA 2-1, at the end of a tense half hour of extra time.

Hundreds of Ghanaians and other Londoners had crammed into the bars of Acre Lane, Brixton to watch a display full of panache, tricks, flicks and freedom, but also strength and the ability to come back when it seemed the pendulum was swinging away from them.

Says John Brewin of ESPN ...

Africa's most pragmatic side flew in the face of tired clichés about naivety defining players from this continent

They're the third African side to make it in the World Cup quarter finals, after Cameroon in 1990 and Senegal in 2002.

So, lots of things to talk about ...

Is this finally football the way it was meant to be played and the way you were hoping it would be played at World Cup 2010?

Will the yellow cards and suspensions for André Ayew and Jonathan Mensah, and possible injury to Kevin-Prince Boateng prove Ghana's undoing against Uruguay?

Will now be the time the Black Stars really miss Michael Essien at the business end of the tournament?

How can they advance where Cameroon and Senegal didn't?

[Personal details removed by Moderator]The unity, hard work and mental strength of this black stars team seem so great and pleasantly unbelievable. I still believe we should aim at the finals and not what cameroon and senegal have achieved. Let's raise the bar so that african teams will subsequently be well challenged.

Bravo Black Stars - I watched the match last with my heart ( and rather a lot of red wine) in my mouth.
What I though was the amazing backbone they showed, when the US came out after half time, they were in fighting mood, and I though to quote some famous words “they think it’s all over”, but it wasn’t, Ghana pulled themselves together and fought back – fabulous!
Italy (my adopted home team) is out, I fully expect England be shown the door by Germany this evening, but now I have another squad to cheer on - forza stelle nere!

    Nana in Ghana,
Right now the sky is the limit for the Black Stars. This was the best match yet in this WC no doubt. Ghanaian football has matured to an extent it's frightening and exciting at the same time. The word here is pragmatism. I hope the other African countries learn. God bless Ghana!

The most serious purpose of football is as a surrogate for war. The idea is that win or lose we can applaud the skill of our conquerors, and decry the failures of our champions.
But, when justice is blatantly trashed, by refereeing incompetence backed up by an organisation which refuses to put in place the systems which would ensure any errors were reversed, instead we have the losing side, all the neutrals and even the ashamed winners equally incensed. Thus Thierry Henry's handball in the qualifiers, Englands goal against Germany today.

Now of course we all remember from school what the big sports stars were like, yes, intellectually limited.

How can we get an adult in charge of FIFA?

I am not English I do not even like football but was just listening BBC world news and some unfair comments about the English team were being made...I think that to continue playing a match knowing that the game should be 2-2 instead 2-1 is not easy and to criticize the players for having to continue playing when they have ahead of them an unfair match to play is not very clever...

I have never been more embarrased to be an England team supproter than today. Regardless of the goal that should have been, the England team let both themselves and the nation down, with a lack of passion to win the game.
Certain individuals failed to turn up today, and in some cases for the tournament.
Maybe we should let someone with passion such as Stuart Pearce take charge as head coach of England, (at least he cares if we win or lose).

I think it is absolutely discusting that 11 PREMIERSHIP players don't have enough passion to even try to pull the game back, i think it is about time we let our championship boys have a go, if nothing else they will at least try to win in the world cup. Its high tim for change in the england camp!!!!!!!!

I was absolutely disgusted with the attitude of the main commentator for the match. From the moment the German team scored the first goal, his comment being England have never come back to win a world cup match when the opposite team have scored first, to the last German goal being scored. His commentary at this point, 21 minutes before the game ended was that Germany were through to the next round. After having witnessed England have one obvious goal disallowed seconds after scoring their first which would have drawn the game level, I went on to witness an England performance that showed the heart of the 1966 team, coming close to scoring on many occasions including the amazing Frank Lampard free kick. I was proud of the England performance and the character they showed to not give up when the commentator obviously thought they should. In those closing 20 minutes of the match I witnessed many possible chances created by both England and Germany as the game wasn't over. The commentator was so dispiriting to listen to as regards the English team both my wife and I wanted to switch his commentary off. As this is the first time in my life I have been so infuriated to write about a commentator I kept the sound on to catch his name.

So, so, so disappointed with England.

There can be no excuses, we just did not perform against a "young and inexperienced" German team. One poor call by an assistant referee does not make a match. The defending was Sunday park standard at times, with all due respect to those that perform week after week but don't get paid stupid amounts of money. At least the Sunday lads play for the love of the game and with a passion for it too.

The biggest mistake Capello made? Stripping John Terry of the captaincy, compounded by handing it to Gerrard after Ferdinand was ruled out. Rio was a poor choice to succeed Terry but Stevie G has shown no leadership since being handed the armband. Three superb Premiership players (among the rest of the squad) but only one leader suitable for England.

Who's to take over if Capello goes? I fancy Pearce and Beckham, at least we'd have some passion off the pitch that the players might take onto it. It won't happen will it though? Only if the "suits" think it might be cheaper!

    John Pearce, Chagford, Devon.

Gerrard, Lampard Rooney and Terry - you have done nothing for this country in the world cup - you just pick up your huge weekly pay cheques and don't give a stuff about the england fans - join the last 20 years of over paid pre madonna's - but do the right thing and let people who have a passion for england play - i would have bust my ass to play tonight and you'd been better than you . retire and take the cash back home you wasters.

I am very much looking forward to Ghana annihilating Uruguay. You have a wonderful goalkeeper, and play beautifully.

  • Comment number 16.

Well done to Ghana! Both Ghana and Uruguay are happy to be in the quarter finals and are already exceeding the expectations they set for themselves. The most important thing from a neutral's aspect, is that they can both enjoy the game without the pressure of expectation.

The Match Between Ghana is one of the greatest match which everyone would like to watch because Ghana the only African nation which Africans hope for.Now that Brazil is out the destination of Ghana is main focus.Uruguay is not to be down looked.90min may the best team win
