WHYS tomorrow: Ghana's Oil...Jackpot or Jinx?
"Sink your pick, you never know where you'll hit paydirt" goes an old saying. Well Ghana has sunk and, it seems, it's hit the big time.
Africa's first independent nation has just located over 600 million barrels of the sticky stuff and president John Kufour says: "My joy is that I'll go down in history as the president under whose watch oil was found to turn the economy of Ghana around for the better."
Is this good for Ghana? Read on . . .
"If you find oil, you manage it well, can you complain about that?" continues president Kufour in an interview during which he actually had a glass of the oil in one hand and champagne in the other and was proudly presenting it (the oil) to dignitaries at a party (for the full revealing interview with the pres, visit our sister programme Newshour here).
I guess there isn't much to disagree with there but how do you feel about African nations' records in managing their oil wealth? Do think this is going to work out well for Ghana?
Nigeria's oil wealth has brought a host of problems along with it. Are you confident that Ghana can avoid them?
World Have Your Say will be discussing Ghana's oil sometime this week, so if you'd like to take part in the discussion just mail us your details or post a message below.
