STORIES FOR BBC WORLD SERVICE NEWS PROGRAMMES
If you'd like to suggest a story or issue you think BBC World Service news should cover, then please email us direct, or post below. We'll let you know what we think of your idea regardless of whether it gets on air.
ISSUES OR STORIES FOR DISCUSSION ON WORLD HAVE YOUR SAY
There are a number of ways you can suggest a story or issue that you would like to see discussed on World Have Your Say. Here are some of the questions we ask ourselves everyday, and details of how you can tell us about your suggestion.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE MAKING A SUGGESTION
- What one question would you like to me to ask right at the beginning of the show?
- Is the debate you're suggesting going to be of interest to people all around the world? We often imagine a café owner in San Francisco, a taxi driver in evening rush hour in Accra or a student getting ready for bed in Delhi. They could all be listening. Will they be interested in the debate you're suggesting? And if not, how could you shape it to involve them more?
- Can you send us links to prove that people are already talking about this issue online?
- Why should we do this debate today? What is so compelling that this subject deserves to be chosen over all others?
- Who would you like to hear taking part in your debate? What countries and types of people would you want to involve?
HOW TO MAKE A SUGGESTION
1. EMAIL US AT ANY TIME
The address is worldhaveyoursay@bbc.co.uk. Please put 'Debate suggestion for WHYS' in the subject.
2. CALL DURING OFFICE HOURS
Our office phone number is country code 44 20 7557 0635. Monday to Friday we are at our desks between 1100GMT and 1900GMT. You're welcome to call us at any time.
3. POST A MESSAGE ON OUR FIRST BLOG POST OF THE DAY
Every weekday, one of us gets in at 0900GMT to post details of some of the stories we're thinking about picking up on. This is an example. You can leave your suggestion at the bottom of the post.
4. JOIN THE WHYS EDITORIAL MEETING
We meet at 1130GMT to choose the topic/s for that day and you're welcome to join us on the phone. If you'd like to, you'll need to call or email us in advance. And if you happen to be in London, you're welcome to come to Bush House for the full experience.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU'VE MADE A SUGGESTION?
It's likely that one of three things will happen.
1) We love the idea and it makes the show.
2) We're not sure and want to test the water on the blog. We'll ask you to write a post about your debate which we'll publish, promote in the Daily Email and may also mention on air. If it gets a big response we'll definitely consider putting it in the programme. Otherwise, it'll remain online for you all to discuss in your own time.
3) We're really not sure your idea works for WHYS and decide not to use it. If this happens, we'll be happy to explain why we've made that decision.
We're very grateful to all of you who make debate suggestions for WHYS. If this page doesn't answer all of your questions, you're very welcome to email me.

Many nations like Brazil, India and African nations are not represented in an appropiate way. Therefore there is an imbalance towards the after war-era that turns around the US, France, the UK, Russia and China.
More effective instruments and mechanisms have to be developed in order to prevent conflicts in a multi-polar world, namely in the Middle East, but also ecological issues like climate change in order to come to sustainable solutions.

How would Nova Scotia's, Newfoundland's and/or Canada's allies view their demanding for-themselves a postage stamp sized piece of territory that for-over-two-centuries has been France's overseas territory?
What if Brazil or Suriname decided that it was innapropriate for (South America's) French Guiana to remain a France overseas territory and demanded French Guiana for themselves- would France just say 'OK' and leave French Guiana and its EU space-industry bases??

The human brain did not just suddenly double in size around 200,000 years ago. A number of hominid species had large brains - larger than one might predict from simple adaptive advantage. Modern humans have brain sizes averaging around 1350 cc. Homo Erectus (2 m.y. - 500,000 ago) had a range of brain sizes from 750 to 1225 cc (only 10% smaller than modern humans for the top end). Homo Heidelbergensis (500,000 years ago) also had a brain only slightly smaller than ours - and was known to be capable of complex multi-step manufacture of tools. Our cousins, the Neanderthals had brains actually a little larger than our own.
Clearly something happened to set hominids on a path toward larger brains, but that something appears to greatly pre-date "mitochondrial Eve." The answer will likely come from further investigation of homo erectus and the transition to archaic homo sapiens.

-Is it legitimate for governments to control and limit who can live where on the face of the earth's surface?
-Do governments legitimately represent the people they claim to represent, any more than other organizations which might claim peoples' allegiances, such as hobby and sporting groups, professional associations and unions, churches and religious sects, local clan or village authorities, etc.?
-Should the media make statements like "China said Monday that..." when actually "China" didn't say anything, but rather the regime that claims jurisdiction over China said something?
-Why do governments virtually never want to allow people in territory they control to become politically independent, when that is what the people living there want?
-Is nationalism a type of bigotry, like racism, sexism, or homophobia?
-Should people be required to be citizens of a particular country?

Are the huge atmospheric 'holes' in our ozone layers over the Poles really closing or are they breeding more holes - will our atmosphere dissapear in the next 30 years and the Earth die from Solar radiation? Will total loss of our forest 'lungs' make a difference and are our seas really dying from radiation and pollution, and if alge eats radiation then why isn't this being utilised?
There's a website somewhere for scientists to come up with simple solutions to assist the climate in their areas plus my dad thinks when there is a drought, that the airforce can chuck a weather "bomb" into the clouds to make it rain!! - Which I might add - apparently is a reported fact as military test sites have already done this... So... if solutions already exist then why isnt all this stuff being rolled out Globally? And best of all what are the conspiracy theories and are they possible? - Thanks!

The other day a nurse (Shirley Chaplin) was banned by the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Trust Hospital from wearing her crucifix at work! The very same one that she had worn around her neck for 30 years on the wards, yet two female Muslim doctors were exempt from removing their headscarves. The hospital claimed it was in breach of the health and safety policy - because patients 'would' be able to grab it and harm her or themselves?? Its unreal! A picture of the said crucifix showed it was not actually a ridiculous size like 3-metres wide but one big whole inch! This is a woman not being allowed to wear the sign of her religion in the country of her religion yet everyone else can wear whatever denomination they like? Its pathetic but ultimately, its not about 'religion' but about all sorts of other pointless things that are stopped for extremely vague reasons. The way these things are 'decided' and the reasons for them have been called 'bureaucratic silliness' and it is! This silliness is starting to get serious and we need to sort it out because it is reflected into larger issues where we have stupid policies about immigration, banking, pensions, children etc etc and relationships with other countries !

There is an ongoing power struggle in R.A.K between Sheikh Saud and Sheik Kalid. We also pay fat bonuses for servants who do very little when those payments should be paying for better health and emergency services for instance.
Many Salaries should be based on the cost of living and if anyone wants to earn more they should work for it. There are many jobs out there that pay sick pay, whether one is sick or not which is like living on a false economy.
This country (UK) is still borrowing Millions and show no sign of letting up under a Labour Government. It appears they seem clueless on how to at least slow down or to stop and start building the economy and there are many very wealthy people in this country who do not pay enough into the economy whom we could do without.

Is it time for the governments to step in and regulate what Adobe can do in terms of crashing computers with their overloading "push Advertising"?
And what penalties should Adobe pay in damages for lost data due to their "Flash" content? Adobe lost me five months of data that I was behind on but was working to catch up on and that made me really angry.

Nonetheless, I hear, listen and observe very frequent conflicts between Israel and Palestine in my 50s year of age. This is almost an age of a generation. So, cannot one presume conflict between Israel and Palestine has become their culture or made it their life style?
Why these peoples don’t solve their disputes between them is one thing. The most surprising is why the UN and nations of the world don’t seek for a solution to these peoples even to the extent of resettling one of them elsewhere in the world.
There is a saying in Ethiopia that ‘the death of an ox (used to plough) of individual is the pleasure for the other’. Similarly, it seems that the chaos between Israel and Palestine is the pleasure for other nations.
If the UN and leaders of nations of the world are unable to solve the problem between Israel and Palestine, then why not peoples of the world voice loud for a solution and bringing about peace for these peoples? These people have to enjoy peace just as other peoples of the world! Is it not?

During the 2008 USA election, almost 80% of the world’s population was the supporter of President Barack Obama. There were two main reasons for that. The first was Obama is black as well as white and Christian as well as Muslim (in his family) and, thus, earning a large worldwide support. The second and main reason was his promise to change the internal (USA) and external (world) policy of America. But did he keep all his promises he made during his election campaign?
Of course, Obama has come out from the internally terrorizing economic
crisis as he promised. But did he do any significant change externally? For example, he promised that he would bring democracy in Africa. He also promised that he would bring about economic integration with Africa against McCain’s participation agenda with Africa. But did Obama bring about democracy in Africa? Did he make relevant economic integration with Africa? One cannot confidently say ‘yes’.
One can wonder why USA presidents share the same behaviour of changing their words and promises after they possess power. Their so called ‘strategic reason’ blind them to see societies’ need for democracy and development in Africa and elsewhere in the world.

Our planet, the Earth, is now infected by humans. Governments run for a solution when an infection is felt prevalent endangering human life. For example, governments are currently discussing and carrying out submits on the global warming in search for a solutions. This is an individual diagnosis of the planet’s organ just as doctors’ diagnosis of the human organ after being informed the painful part. Such approach is not helpful for restoring our planet suitable for human life once for all.
Many of our planet’s key organs and peripherals are already infected. The soil, the water, the air and the biodiversities, i.e. animals and plants are infected. Therefore, a brilliant idea is to promote an ambitious and stretching holistic strategy and programmes of rebooting the planet.
Advanced countries try to compensate governments or peoples of seriously injured part of the planet’s organ. That is just like sewing the torn part of clothes rather than getting new ones. If to be compensated, it is the planet or nature that should be compensated through restoration.
The initiative, strategy development and monitoring of implementing the rebooting the planet by countries in cooperation, collaboration and individually can be carried out by the UN. The responsibility of UN should not be limited to political matters. UN should be caring and responsible for the upkeep of our planet in order to make it conducive for the livelihood of future generations.

These days any movement of groups of people against their dictator leaders is presumed as a terrorist activity. This is just good news for dictators and even dictators are legislating laws of anti terrorism without proper definition and distinction between movement for freedom and movement for terrorist activity.
Because of terrorism, no movement of freedom or democracy is getting support anywhere in the world. Because of the USA as the primary victim of terrorism, the USA government does not give ear when freedom movement groups are attacked by their dictators as terrorists. How can then people victim of dictatorial oppression liberate themselves when peaceful struggle is not the option?
If human rights organizations and democratic leaders assume that there is democracy and no oppression all nations of the world, it means they have gone wrong. Therefore, the UN has to make a clear distinction between terrorist act and struggle for freedom and democracy. Nations legislative act for anti terrorism control should also be in line with the definitions and frameworks that should developed by the UN.

It is true that technology is vital for mankind automating processes, increasing the quality and quantity of goods and services. All these are advantages to mankind in exploiting and sharing resources efficiently and effectively.
On the other hand, creative destruction technologies are making people jobless than ever in history. For example, the mobile phone technology has destroyed the photo and video camera, the photo film, the TV, the watch, the calculator, the radio and even the computer and other product/service industries. This is in fact good news for consumers, especially electronic product consumers. The bad news is that these creative destruction technologies made millions of people jobless by destructing products/services now compiled in mobile phones.
In the near future, I am afraid that taxi will be driven using remote control and millions of taxi drivers lose their jobs, for example. How would you rate the advantages and disadvantages of creative destruction technologies?

There is an intention of forming the United States of Africa (USA2) which had been discussed among leaders of African nations. Even I heard that President Muammar Al-Gaddafi is interested to be the minister of defence of USA2.
As an idea, it is very nice! But I think too premature. Even the Europeans who have almost equal level of economic development and infrastructures such as railways, communication, etc, that connect them did not proceed more than currency union. So, how can it be possible to form USA2 led by leader?
In my opinion, African nations should first establish trade and economic interaction between themselves. This should start by few numbers of countries like between East African, North African, West African and South African countries. Between these segments of countries, infrastructures like communication, road, electricity, etc, need to be constructed and stretched. These will create interactions between people and bring about cultural and values homogeneity as a precondition for unification.
Secondly, the existing African Union (AU) should take the responsibility to prepare the ground works that enables the formation of one African government. One of the ground works can be educating the peoples of African countries and even their leaders. How can the USA2 be formed while ethnic conflicts are prevalent even within a nation of Africa? Thus, the peoples of African countries including their leaders should be thought with regard to broadening their mind and scope of thinking about the advantages of unification if the formation of USA2 is to be realistic. This, apart from others, can be achieved through intensive media education handled by the existing African union.

Blacklist, blackmail, black market, black economy, black arts, black bag job, etc.! Why is everything of illegal and evil matters attributed to black? This is undoubtedly the racists terms to refer to the black people. But are black people as people illegal, evil, dishonest …?
I am black but I never feel any inferiority as I know myself. Yet, I feel disgrace as these terminologies convey messages of supremacy of the racist whites. Shame is to those who initially used such terminologies for their inability to see the future. The world is dynamic and everything changes; the big becomes the small and vice versa; the poor becomes rich and vice versa. The strong become weak and vice versa. The stupid becomes intellectual and vice versa. And so on. The individual who shares the black blood is today the president of a super power country, USA.
In fact these terminologies may have no any economic impact on black people. But it is asocial and amoral. In this civilized world people should not use such terminologies especially with mental recall of the black people.
I have seen Ethiopia in the Oxford Learners dictionary taken as the best example for famine and drought. Yes, Ethiopia was attacked by drought and the consequence famine. But it is shame to put such examples for defining terminologies. Can that example work now to the young generations when Ethiopia is growing at a double digit rate? In short, before using terminologies that are of amoral, it is of apt choosing words.

Media can be categorized as the second government. It can popularize or defame anything big in any country. When media information is based on facts and truth, it can even be more than a government influencing people and changing situations.
The bad news is that most media in any country are serving as pressure group magnifying their government’s performance on minor things. These media disseminate information from top to down instead of bottom up (i.e. from people to government) so that governments can take corrective actions. This is what makes local media less than a second government. What is the use of disseminating information from top to bottom? This has, of course, relevance but not as much as information from bottom to up.
But there are also international media like BBC, CNN, etc, their information of which is trustworthy, their reporters bold enough to dig facts and expose realities and, therefore, highly influential to make a difference, say for example, in influencing for change of a wrong government policy, undemocratic governance, etc through their fact-based information. Such media can be categorized as second government with international respect.
However, it does not mean that all international media are totally acceptable. These media, although better than local media, are also chasing information from VIP people. They do not give value to the voice of ordinary people (the bottom of the pyramid). They are also highly focused on minor issues of advanced countries than major issue in poor or underdeveloped countries. This must be changed. Media need to stand for people than for governments and VIP people only. NowPublic is the best giving a chance to ordinary people to breath, at least!
