Motty's World Cup final preview

Post categories:

John Motson | 13:24 UK time, Saturday, 10 July 2010

After a month-long fiesta of football the World Cup final is upon us and Spain and the Netherlands will battle it out at Soccer City in Johannesburg on Sunday to hold aloft the coveted trophy - which will be a first for either team.

Here's my preview of the final.

As a German I guess it's strange that I want the Netherlands to win. I just think the nation deserves it. They were the best team in 1974 and although they have not been brilliant to watch I hope they do it.

On the other hand, on paper Spain should win this and have (in my opinion) the best player on the planet; Iniesta.

Also, how weird would it be if Spain win this? Then New Zealand is the only team in the WC undefeated...

Motty was reading off a bit of paper!

I thought all your fascinating facts came from your brain Motty!

I think Spain are more likely to win at Soccer City, but the Dutch could yet cause problems on the break. It's likely to be close.

Like others, I'm still waiting to see the classy Spain side I saw in Euro 2008. If they do show up, the Dutch won't know what to do.

Hoping for a good match though.

Thank you John for your Motty memories of World Cups, intelligent statistics and I think we all hoped you would of been on the commentating team again for the BBC for this World Cup. . .

Anyway although I stopped watching the football after England's 4.1 defeat by Germany, in the 66th minute but sometimes situations are blessings in disguises. . .New technology for the sport and the possibility of England hosting the tournament in 2018. . .

However, over 2 billion people, yes thats right, 2 billion, will be watching this final today and I shall join them by watching the match on BBC. . .

Lets hope its a great match. . .!

Sorry Motty but ghosts don't exist. Cruyff won't be playing tonight...

Just because Netherlands were in 2 finals nearly 40 years ago doesn't make them deserve the title more than Spain...
Holland had their chance and blew it, few reasons to think history won't repeat tonight...

I am old enough to remember all the talk about Jack Taylor's wonderful final performance in '74. Hope Webb does a better job. Taylor was conned by Holzenbein for the German penalty. Had Taylor done his homework he would have seen Holzenbein do exactly the same trick in an earlier round of the competition. Watch the official film of the tournament and you will see this.
