Motty's England verdict

Post categories:

John Motson | 15:21 UK time, Thursday, 24 June 2010

Well, England are through to the last 16 of the World Cup thanks to a 1-0 victory over Slovenia. Next up it's Germany. While we wait for that, watch the video below for my thoughts on England's display in their final Group C game.

Hopefully the pressure is now off as England will go into each game from hereinafter playing teams ranked higher than them in the Fifa rankings, so are effectively the underdog.
They could actually play Germany, Argentina, Portugal and Brazil, thus laying top rest all of the ghosts of world cups past in one tournament.
Come on England you have nothing to fear, just go and enjoy it.

Bit of a worry to draw the Germans again, especially as Ozil looks pretty formidable, in common with the rest of their team. They are always well organised, and have the history & mental strength on their side, so I think we will have our work cut out on Sunday.

So far as England are concerned, yes, better against Slovenia, but I am unconvinced.........

We created several almost 'open-goal' chances (Lampard, Rooney, for example), but failed to convert them.

Defoe had a big slice of luck with his goal, which was directly at the 'keeper from point blank range, and who actually got his hands to it.

Desperate defending at the death leaving Terry on the floor and all but an open goal for Slovenia to equalise..........luck again; We should never have let that situation arise.....

Rooney? Old ankle injury flared up again? ......... I wonder if he will start on sunday, and if he does, will he finish..........??

As for Sunday, well lads, just ensure that you have bought all your souvenirs and have your bags ready for packing on Monday.......

....still, it's a funny old game.......you just never can tell.

Lets hope they can do it...............my tip? 3-1 to the Germans, but after all, what do I know? Maybe it's the history that's clouding my judgement(?)

    OK, 2-1 to England......

Comment number 4 from inmylifetime is the kind of spirit and support we need. Come on England, we're into the do or die stage of the tournament, unbelievable drama that comes once every four years. Who are these people with their negative comments and small minded digs at a legend like Motty? Shame on you. Is that all you have to add? It's a festival, the greatest sporting event on earth, and we should enjoy it. I can't wait for Sunday. I'd much rather be playing Germany than Ghana, and I think it will bring the best out of the side. It's going to be a nail biting, nerve wracking classic finishing in either elation or despondency, but then that's what it's all about. And if we win, Maradonna and Argenitneans next, in a re-run of 1986. It's scripted surely? Mouth watering, this is what it's all about. Ghana then S. Korea or Uruguay? No thanks. Hope you're enjoying it as much as I am Motty.

I find it rather amusing how some people can question Motty's knowledge of football. He's been commentating on the sport for 40+ years now so I think it's safe to say he has some experience under his belt!

In terms of England and their performance there can be no argument that they've improved from their other two games (especially the Algeria one). The Slovenia game was actually watchable and not infuriating like many of the other games that have taken place at this World Cup.

Capello's changes seemed to work and with more time spent together on the pitch the better England can get. They looked lively throughout and rarely looked like conceeding a goal (fairly key in a tournament situation). Some might say it was only Slovenia but the minnows are definitly causing the major nations trouble, especially in the case of Italy and France.

Germany look good but are nothing like the experienced and resilient sides of old that seem to be getting everyone so worried. England have the perfect blend of experience and youth within the squad and I think it very reasonable that we can be optimistic and enthusiastic of getting a good result against the Germans and progressing further!

    Come on England!

I concur that John Motson was an excellent commentator, and brought the first zest of atmospheric excitement to England’s games during these tournaments. . .I have so much respect for his experience of footballing history and the great memories this is the only Sports Correspondent I blog on. . .I remember the sheer delight of patriotism from him during England’s 5.1 win over Germany. . .Just so to not misinterpret, this won’t be the score on Sunday, but as I am a superstitious man I am pleased the match is being aired on BBC. . .

Well, as it stands both of the 2006 World Cup finalists didn’t progress past the group stages, and as I stressed earlier on my blogging history of this tournament England play better football as we progress further and further in the tournament. . .

Even Beckenbeur used to comment that the England team is like a flash sports car, that does not start at first but when it gets going performs superbly. . .

Remember saying that Beckenbeur? So take no notice of his comments. . .

Truth is that both teams, in my opinion are evenly balanced, and both will be apprehensive of one another. . .If there is ever a better time to amend our defeats against Germany in the World Cup Finals now is the time. . .But we have to play better than we did against Slovenia. . .

Please, Fabio, Pearce, Terry do not divulge too much about our team prior to Kick Off. . .Remember the precepts of winning. . .

England have done the hard part in getting through the group stages and can now look forward to the next game with some confidence.
We have seen people criticising the team, the players and the manager, all of which were a bit over the top, but only a fool would write off Englands chances of going further.
My personal view is that England will have gained a huge boost from beating Slovenia and will go through against Germany without any difficulty. The score might only be 1-0 but theres no fear of it going down to penalties this time.

I think we have a good chance to beat the Germans, OK we started off poorly, but there was improvement in the last game. We came through the group without losing and only conceded 1 goal. The Germans seemingly started well, but their result against the 10 men of Australia was flattering! They are not a greater force than England and I can see it being a closely fought game, either a draw or just one goal in it either way. After that we potentially have a meeting with Argentina, who I think will be too strong for England and have to be favourites to win the tournament, our best hope is that Mexico pull off a result against them and take them out of the tournament for us. If that happens I fancy England to oust Mexico in the 1/4 finals. After that anything could happen!

The Germans did not look that great against Ghana. They are a young team in the Process of rebuilding. I expect them to me to be more formidable in Euro 2012. The Spain v Chile result could be interesting .If Spain top the group it could be Germany, Argentina, Spain and Brazil to win the world cup. a Big ask for a team with a shaky defense in front of a goalkeeper called " Calamity James", an almost non functioning strike force and question marks over the fitness of Rooney

If you want to win the world cup then there is no fitting way of doing it than beating the Germans. If you want to be the best then we need to beat the best. Lets not shirk this task and leave it to other teams to do work which we should relish and not be afriad of. In a perfect world we should knock out Maradona's Argentina ( dont let Mexico take care of that we need to take care of that) and not with a handball (mind you that would be funny) by an honest goal ( or 3!!). Germany will not win this world cup so lets hasten their departure. England will beat Germany and my gut feeling that this is the game Rooney discovers his right foot and knocks in 2 goals. Rooney's entrance into the wrold cup will start Sunday, there is no way he wants to leave South Africa without doing something sensational (on the positive side of course)cos he knows he is so much better than that

Place your bets now. I'd advise a fiver either way so you lose less.

But realistically now, Germany got one point less than us in qualifying against arguably harder opposition. They are going to miss Ballack which is a big miss and for once maybe have a less experienced GK. The entire team is quite young but lets hope Schweinstieger, Ozil and Podolski don't start performing against us.

England need to turn up at this one and give it a good go. Germanys defence hasn't really had a good run round yet which could be good but saying that, I think it will be a close match. I hope Capello plays the same squad as Wednesday but maybe with different subs and also will we be playing in red seen as we are the away team ???

The knockout stages have gone okay though. I'd rather see the best on one side and the so called lesser teams on the other. As it stands one less than top ten fifa ranking teams can progress to the semis on one side of the knock out round tables. USA (14) v Ghana (32) and Uruguay (16) v South Korea (42).

Brazil are on this side of the table and most likely play Chile or Switzerland in the last 16. This group is funny if Spain draw with Chile they will need Honduras and the Swiss to draw to go through 2nd on GD. There is no chance both these matches will end in 0- 0 draws so 1st and second could go to GF and against (If Spain and Switzerland win 1 - 0 (or 2- 1) then what happens ???). Either way Spain need to win to not meet brazil in the second round (or get knocked out!) and be on our side of the table against Portugal as the last of the last 16.

The Netherlands or Brazil for one the final positions unless their is a shock semi and if Spain don't come second in the group (unlikely). And either Argentina, Spain or possibly Portugal for the other Final position.

England certainly look to have the hardest route to the final and as inmylife has said we have a real chance of Portugal or Spain in the semis after already very tough games. Anyhow who wants to win a world cup without having to play the best to win it.

    I still believe.

Always good to hear Motty's views on things, even if his pre-tournament predicitions turned out to be way off the mark. To be honest I agree with quite a few people on hear and think that playing Germany in the second round could provide the catalyst for us going on to bigger and better things. After all, this is the type of game that people remember for a long time and these players will be well aware of that. The current crop of Germany players are nothing like the Lothar Matthaus et. al. group that were lucky to put us out in Italia '90. This Germany team is beatable, be it on penalties or otherwise. I expect us to play with a lot more passion and intensity than we have so far, and it might just be enough to push us over the edge.

For those of you talking about Argentina then Portugal then Brazil or Spain whatever. If we beat Germany we'll be filled with confidence and just like most of these teams probably aren't scared of England, England should not be scared of them either.

.....and it's high time Rooney and Lampard realised they're at the World Cup and not on holiday already.

Get all the players to belt out the National Anthem, including Wayne Rooney ( he must have a singing voice, somewhere ? ).

Motty, your task if you accept it, is to get all the players singing the National Anthem.
You could try Lineker and the boys in the studio, to help you out with the task.

Yes, if Switzerland win by two goals they are guaranteed to qualify, and, yes, if they achieve that Spain must win because Chile are currently ahead of them and a draw would therefore eliminate Spain. If Spain won 1-0 they would qualify with Switzerland ahead of Chile on goal difference. And, yes, Switzerland's win over Spain would put them top if the two teams finished win the same goal difference AND the same number of goals scored (both these criteria come before the result between the two teams).

Motty's analysis of England didn't really amount to much, did it (although, in fairness, he may say more in the build up to Sunday). It's a fair point that Milner did okay on the right, and that Upson didn't let England down.
I would like to hear Motty say a bit about our midfield. There has been quite a lot of comment on Phil McNulty's blog about this; in particular about Frank Lampard. I feel he was poor four years ago (even though he ended up playing EVERY MINUTE of England's five games) ... and he is doing the same in South Africa. Why is he immune from being dropped, Motty? Is the lack of a decent alternative? Sadly, his lethargic, negative play is what is keeping Gerrard from a central midfield berth.
