'Brake'-ing News Update...

Elham Rizi | 14:32 UK time, Tuesday, 31 May 2011

There has been a huge response to our Citroen C3 Picasso investigation last week. Citroen recalled 22,000 of them after we revealed the brakes could be activated from the PASSENGER side. But, a week later Watchdog now finds the same problem is happening in other Citroen models. And in those from other manufacturers. Up to half a million cars could be affected. Do you own one of them? Chris Hollins reports.

Will this rogue come clean?

Post categories:

Katy R | 11:09 UK time, Tuesday, 24 May 2011

This week Rogue Traders is talking vacuum cleaners - the Dyson vacuum cleaner to be exact (other brands are available). We've been looking into companies that have found a way to use your Dyson to suck money out of you, companies like ASG (Midlands) Ltd, based in Lincoln and Vac Care Ltd, based in Hampshire. Not to be confused with companies of a similar name.

These companies cold-call people and persuade them to have their Dyson serviced in their own home. But once their foot's in the door, they try to flog you parts - parts you may not need and which in some cases could void your Dyson 5 year guarantee.

Thinking of swapping to online shopping?

Post categories:

Katy R | 10:40 UK time, Tuesday, 24 May 2011

Shopping. Crowded streets, nowhere to park, long queues at the checkouts, then, at the end of it all, a dirty great bill! Online shopping should be the perfect solution, everything you need is just a computer click away. It's quicker, more convenient and apparently a lot cheaper.

Take ordering a pizza. You can order and pay for your Dominos takeaway online, and just breeze in and collect it later. Pick the pizza you'd like - a large "deluxe" is £17.99; put in your card details and pick it up. But you might be surprised by an advert in the window: "Collection special. Any pizza. Any size. £10.99". Why? Because at some stores Dominos exclude online orders from this deal, and had you ordered over the phone, you'd have been seven pounds better off.

Some 'brake'ing news!

Post categories:

Elham Rizi | 16:59 UK time, Friday, 20 May 2011

When it comes to safety, a car's braking system is probably the most important feature. And yet we don't give it a second thought, until you actually need them.

Take the Citroen C3 Picasso for example. Like all modern cars it's fitted with a sophisticated braking system designed to stop you quickly and safely.

Tax doesn't have to be threatening...

Post categories:

Elham Rizi | 14:59 UK time, Friday, 20 May 2011

Threatening letters, warnings of coming to collect tax debts and even auctioning off personal possessions in order to recover money. And all this from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.

The government's finances are in a mess, so maybe a crackdown is justified. But are they going after the wrong people?

The Sun and News of the World LEGO Promotion...

Katy R | 20:46 UK time, Thursday, 19 May 2011

This week the Sun and the News of the World have been running an offer for their readers - LEGO toys. All you have to do is exchange a voucher from each day's paper for a different toy, to be collected at either WH Smiths or Toys R Us. And, as the LEGO models are based on characters from films like Pirates of the Caribbean and Toy Story, the promotion has proved incredibly popular.

But, we've had complaints from viewers who've tried to exchange their vouchers - only to be told by both stores that they'd run out.

Tesco: Double The Price Difference

Post categories:

Elham Rizi | 14:26 UK time, Thursday, 19 May 2011

Tesco recently withdrew its guarantee to give customers double the price difference on any products they could find cheaper at its rival Asda. Instead it now pledges to reimburse any price differences with a voucher.

But on Tuesday, three weeks after dropping the original guarantee, an advert appeared in the Sun newspaper again promising to double the difference. Why did this happen?

A frosty reception...

Post categories:

Katy R | 11:51 UK time, Monday, 16 May 2011

We all love sitting down to watch a spot of television so when things go wrong, it couldn't be more annoying. Ghosting, digital picture freeze, everything out of sync, it's frustrating to say the least. When it does all go wrong many people turn to the internet for help, which is where the Surrey based Television Aerial Company Ltd - also trading as TV Aerial Company and Satellites & Aerials and Aerialforce (UK) advertise heavily.

Big talk about small print

Post categories:

Katy R | 11:48 UK time, Monday, 16 May 2011

Print comes in all shapes and sizes. When companies want to shout about their offers and deals, it's usually very large. But then there's the information they have to tell us by law, and which is also rather less tempting - and this print ranges from the small to the almost indecipherable.

We're always being told to check the small print before buying, but how many of us have time to wade through all of it? And how many of us can understand it all without the help of a lawyer?

Can you rely on Wickes DIY?

Post categories:

Katy R | 11:18 UK time, Monday, 16 May 2011

Wickes - the DIY retailer providing a service you can trust. That's according to them. And if you're not convinced, how's this for a guarantee? Their adverts say: 'that's why we're proud to put our name on it. It's got our name on it.' Alas, so has the shoddy workmanship and faulty products Watchdog viewers have told us about. Rebecca Wilcox investigates.

What does going green actually mean?

Post categories:

Katy R | 12:28 UK time, Tuesday, 10 May 2011

Eco, green, carbon neutral - they're all words that companies are using more and more. From the biggest businesses to the smallest start ups, everyone wants to prove their eco credentials. But what does going green actually mean? What we as consumers need is clarity, but what we often get is confusion.

Post categories:

Katy R | 12:26 UK time, Tuesday, 10 May 2011

Store cards can be tempting, they're convenient and offer a host of benefits, interest free credit, money off purchases to name a few.... But if your store card is managed by Santander - and they are by far the largest supplier of store cards in the UK - you might want to check your bills.

Mike the mobile mechanic

Post categories:

Elham Rizi | 16:51 UK time, Tuesday, 3 May 2011

This week we're on the road investigating a mobile mechanic: Mike Dos Santos who calls himself 'Just Mechanic' to be precise. He operates in the North London area and his company and website should not be confused with any other company of a similar name. Mike Dos Santos' website says "he'll do the work, when you go to work" - well, that is the beauty of a mobile mechanic.

Things may be bleak if you have a leak...

Post categories:

Elham rizi | 16:41 UK time, Tuesday, 3 May 2011

Britain has just parched in one of the driest Aprils on record but water companies continue to lose gallons and gallons of water every day from leaks. The water industry regulator, OFWAT, has recently praised the companies for the way they've handled burst mains during recent harsh winters. But for some families dealing with Thames Water when their homes repeatedly flood, the response is nowhere good enough.

So we've seen how the Optical Express ads and sales tactics have worried some medical experts (http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/2011/05/optical_pricing.html), but the procedure patients go through before surgery and the information that they have been provided with is also cause for concern.
