Pampers - causing a stink?
Nappies are a key part of a new parent's life. Watchdog reporter and mum of twins Alice Beer, says her little ones went through a 2,200 nappies a year when they were growing up. Ask any mum or dad and they'll testify, once you find your favourite brand, you tend to stick to it. But what happens when your chosen brand lets you down?

Pampers are the UK's leading brand of nappies, trusted and used by thousands of parents. But Watchdog's recently received dozens of complaints about Pampers' range of Active Fit nappies. Keen to get to the bottom of the problem we arranged to meet some of the concerned parents who'd got in touch with the programme.
Sue Lamb and husband Shaz tried many brands of nappy before settling on Pampers Active Fit. They were perfectly happy with them until they bought two bumper boxes in March and realised something was quite different...
According to Sue, within an hour of the new nappy being on, their daughter Amy had leaked at the back.
For Tina Cann, the experience was similar. She also purchased her usual two bulk boxes from the supermarket. It was only when she went to change her daughter Poppy at home that she noticed the marked difference with the new nappies. Tina thought they had a lot less stuffing than she was used to - she actually thought she'd bought a defective packet. Tina then pulled all of the nappies out of the pack and, realising they were all the same, changed Poppy into one. A couple of hours later Poppy was wet.
According to Poppy's mum: "The nappy hangs really low when it gets fuller and then just trickles down her leg so we end up with wet legs, wet socks, trousers, whatever she has on."
We asked some families to try the new nappies, and they couldn't see a problem. But with so many mums adamant there is Alice decided to take a closer look. As far as the packaging, Alice and the parents all agreed that the old and new packs look exactly the same. It's only on closer inspection of the nappy itself that the difference is easy to see. The old nappies seem fatter than the new, modified ones. A lack of padding would appear to be the problem.
Yet with nothing on the packaging to tell parents of a change in design, how would they know their trusted Pampers had changed?
Tina wasn't impressed: "...You go out and buy what you think is a normal product and you get it home and you feel deceived - and cheated".
In fact, the only clue parents have that the nappies have changed is a small purple leaflet tucked inside the pack, asking for feedback.
Watchdog asked the opinion of marketing whizz Chris Arnold. He said he can see why Pampers customers are furious:
"It seems a very odd way to do it," said Chris. "Because you know mothers and babies have a strong trust in brands and you cannot damage that trust whatsoever. So putting something new into the box without telling them is a complete breach of trust. Usually, I mean, if you have a new product you want to sing and dance about it, you want to tell everyone it's wonderful. So doing it this way seems completely barmy."
It's not just in the UK that Pampers customers are complaining, customers of Pampers in America are also cross. There has been a design change there too. Last year Pampers redesigned their 'Cruiser' nappy. Although there are some differences between this and the UK's Active Fit nappy (they use different amounts of absorbent material and fragrance) fundamentally the products are made the same way, using the same technology. The US customers aren't just complaining about leaks. Some parents in the States claim that the new Cruisers have given their babies a rash.
Following press reports and complaints about Cruisers, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has launched an investigation into the nappy.
Pampers have denied their nappy causes rashes, and have made a video featuring Dr J Atherton, a Consultant Paedeatric Dermatologist in which he says: "Nappy rash is an extremely common condition, according to the NHS website it affects about a third of all babies at any one time. And in ten percent of those, it will be severe enough that parents will consider taking him to their GP. Nappy rash is caused by the direct irritating effect of faeces or urine on the baby's skin and despite the name it has absolutely nothing to do with nappies."
Despite this, all the angst across the pond has got mums in the UK worried, too. And the parents we've spoken still can't understand why Pampers changed the design of their nappy without telling them.
Pampers Statement
"Thank you for contacting us about New Pampers Active Fit with Dry Max.
Pampers Active Fit with Dry Max is our best nappy ever. It contains the same types of materials as our previous version. In particular, these nappies continue to use the same type of absorbent gel material. What we've done with the new product is improve the way the gel material works to lock in wetness - we've made sure it's located in the parts of the nappy that need it most. This means we can continue to provide outstanding Pampers dryness in a nappy that is 20 percent thinner than before offering more comfort and freedom of movement for babies.
You mention nappy rash in your letter, so we would like to ensure the facts are clear. Leading dermatologists and experts confirm it is a common misconception that nappies cause nappy rash. Nappy rash is a common condition caused by irritants in urine and faeces on the baby's skin and not by a nappy. It is called nappy rash because of the area of the rash. This skin distress is caused by a number of factors including a change in feeding habits, teething, ill health etc. Babies of all ages, and wearing all types of nappies (cloth or disposable), will be affected by nappy rash at some point. At any given time there are more than 400,000 babies with nappy rash and about 10% of these cases can be severe. To illustrate this point, please refer to the attached link from an NHS website which clarifies that 'nappy rash is a common condition thought to affect up to a third of nappy-wearing babies at any given time'. http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/nappy-rash/Pages/Introduction.aspx.
We're also very proud that a number of healthcare professionals around the world are supportive of new Pampers Active Fit with Dry Max, including Dr. David Atherton, a paediatric dermatologist working as a consultant in Paediatric Dermatology at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, and a Pampers Village expert. The advice provided by experts such as Dr. Atherton is invaluable in helping us to continually improve our products so that they deliver outstanding performance.
Understandably there are a great many UK parents who have grown to love our older Active Fit nappies, and they may have questions about new Active Fit with Dry Max. We would encourage any of our consumers or any Watchdog viewers who have questions, to get in touch with our Consumer Care Line [0800.328.3281 or for Ireland 1800.535124]."

What I've found with the nappies is that they stink. No really, they stink. The moment pee hits them they start to smell really bad, worse than any other nappy I've tried. If I'm honest, I won't be buying Pampers again.

we have since changed nappies and have been unable to use the previous nappies, when you live within a budget the last thing you need is to have to waste a box of nappies, i think there should be a warning on the packaging and refunding should be considered

Everyone on the baby forum received the same reply as the below email :
PAMPERS EMAIL:
Thank you for your email.
I am very sorry to learn about your baby's skin trouble and do hope the symptoms have gone by now.
I would like to reassure you that a great deal of work has gone into the development of all Pampers products to ensure they are safe for infants’ skin, as you would expect with any product designed for a baby. All Pampers are also designed to help avoid those conditions that can lead to nappy rash.
Nappy rash can be caused by almost anything that irritates a baby’s delicate skin. There is no concrete evidence of any particular cause of the condition, other than the varying levels of skin sensitivity, but there are several well-known factors. We all have a natural protective film on our skin and if it is compromised the skin can become red, cracked, inflamed and irritated. When a person’s skin is exposed to urine or faeces for prolonged periods the skin’s protective barrier can be compromised.
I hope this information is helpful but if you are still concerned about your baby’s experience, please seek the advice of your Health Visitor or GP who will be able to help you further.
In the hope that you will return to using Pampers products with confidence, I have sent a voucher which can be used toward a future purchase.
May I thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. Please do not hesitate to get back in touch with us if you have further concerns about Pampers.
We are conducting a survey on your level of satisfaction of the service you received. We hope you will dedicate a few minutes to help us improve our service to you. To participate in the survey please copy and paste the following link into a new internet browser: [Edited]

I contacted them regarding the simply dry nappies which leaked and caused the worst nappy rash (blistering) i have ever had with my two children.
i was fobbed off with scientific claims and reasons for nappy rash eg not changing the nappy often enough or washing powder.
i finally got a refund on the pack i bought.
i have never bought pampers again, sometimes paying more gaurantees better quality not in pampers case!!!!

I am sorry to learn about the unusual trouble you've had with Pampers and appreciate you taking the time to let us know what has happened. The gel should be contained within the nappy but I would like to assure you that if a child were to accidentally ingest the crystals, they would pass through the body and not cause any harm. As you may be aware, the gel is in the nappy to absorb fluid. Numerous safety reassurance tests have been conducted to demonstrate that the material is safe and appropriate for use in baby nappies. The results of these tests are supported by independent health professionals. To better understand what has happened with your nappies, I would like to request a sample nappy from the pack if one is available and have sent a prepaid envelope for your convenience. This nappy will be sent directly to our factory technicians. As we wish to minimise the distress this incident must have caused you, I am sending you a voucher as a gesture of good will. I hope you will use it toward a future purchase of Pampers. Thank you again for bringing this important matter to our attention. If you have further concerns, please do not hesitate to get back in touch with us.

Like the other parents we too bought the 'new' active fit nappies without knowing. If our son has a poo that is even slightly loose it goes all up the back of the nappy and leaks out of the top and goes all up his back ! This is definitely because there is no longer padding up the back of the nappy. We never used to have a problem with this with the old style as any liquid would immediately get soaked into the padding up the back.
Unfortunately I still have 3 packets of these to get through before I can change brands, so for now there is going to be a lot of extra washing and in extreme cased ruined clothes.

When the research team did their extensive testing, did they test to see if no padding was required when a baby is using a walker. Whenever my daughter has been in her walker both wee and poo head straight for the back of the nappy and with no padding there of course it is going to leak. I have gone straight back to using baby dry which I must say I am happy with. Thought it was just a personal thing till I saw it on watchdog tonight. Very interesting.

How pampers can even have the cheek to say this is an improved product is completley beyond me. Obviously they live in an alternate reality! Very very angry mum that has now realised that nights of disrupted sleep having to change a soaking wet baby - and I mean through babygro and sleeping bag and onto sheets are due to a completly stupid design change dreamed up by a complete idiot.

We can only put this down to Pampers as she is fine with any other brand- including [brand removed] own which she is still wearing now.

I was sent some vouchers when I called Pampers to complain and so as I am due to have baby number 2 in the summer I thought I'd use them on the New Baby nappies. I thought I'd open a pack to see if they were ok, and I was gobsmacked to see the same little card note stating the design had changed and sure enough the back of the nappy has no padding and it's a lot thinner. I'm absolutely in no way going to risk using these on a new born, with all the mum's stories of rashes.
I will never use Pampers again and I shall be telling every other mum I know to change brand.

Who out there actually believes that rigerous testing was not carried out on these nappies before release. Watchdog also fail to comment on what the defect percentage is because I would be surprised if it was anywhere near 0.3%. Think logically, car manufacturers don't tell you about all the hundreds of changes to their components (some part of essential systems like braking) purely because they don't have to. And before anyone tags me one of the childless brigade, I have a son of 5 months, we use Pampers and yes, every now and again we get a leaky one. It's simply a defect and needs to be expected where a product is produced on such scale. Also, Anne's comments about not being in Germany (where a sample population of 1200+ babies was used) just came across as childishly desperate, I'm sure that babies in Germany have the same urinary and excrtion systems as UK babies.

I've used pampers active fit on my son since he turned 3 months! Previously I'd used the New Baby nappies but he began to fill them by the middle of the night and they started leaking out the front. I then moved onto the Dry Baby nappies, they weren't too bad at first but they smelled quite a bit in the morning, sometimes they leaked during the night and more often then not they didn't leave him feeling dry and he ended up with really bad nappy rash!
Finally at 3 months he was big enough to fit the Active Fit nappies, they fit great under his clothes (his bum doesn't look to big, unlike when in some nappies) and at night they fit him perfect no leaking from the front or sides and they last from 7:30 to the latest of 9:00!
But my son is different to most babies as from 6 weeks he would only sleep on his tummy which is probably why the padding at the back has never effected us! So I think there Fantastic!!!

So i think PAMPERS need to take notice of all the comments people are putting up and BRING BACK THE OLD STYLE NAPPIE.

I am swtiching my loyalty to a new brand after 1-yr of complete loyalty to Pampers. Plus in the wee demonstration the lady seemed to be completely missing the loose wet stool angle which is the case of leakage in my sons case. It isn't diarhoea it is just normal loose wet stools, but with no rear end padding, there is no absorbancy for poop. My sons excema has gotten worse, we didn't connect it to the nappies but it is in an od place, on the sides of his trunk where the nappies rub, now I am thinking it is the nappy and I am sending the ones we hae left back for a refund.
Finally, I felt missold when I saw the card in the packs and kept hoping the next pack would be the old ones. The card implied 'trial' and asked for feedback, not 'new and changed forever', if it had I would have swapped brands a while ago.

When I picked her up, her clothes were soaked with wee. It’s happened on a few other occasions during the day as well. When the babies are lying down the wee will flow to the back so if there’s no padding at the back of the nappy to soak up the wee of course the nappies will leak. How could pampers not realize this. Will be swapping brand of nappies now as these ones can’t do the job they are suppose to do.

I have always used Pampers, I did for my son (who is now 7) and recommend them to everyone - however, I had noticed that if I'd put an active fit nappy on my daughter she was always soaking, now I know why!

My daughter within 24 hours of being in these nappies got blister like sores on her bottom, the nappies badly leaked and gave off an horrendous odour. I gave pampers my feedback hoping to be given a contact number or to leave my details so that further communication on this issue could take place, but nothing. I eventually found a telephone number on their website, and after a lot of passing around I did speak to a nice girl who was sorry for my experience, explained that they were a trial and arranged for a voucher to be sent to me. The voucher did arrive, I purchased another 2 boxes only to find that they were the same nappy as the trial ones, but without the card! I have given up and will never use pampers again. They were a good nappy - "if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it"!

My little boy had constant leaks. We often visit my mum who lives 2 hours away and with him sat in his car seat for that length of time saw the wee soak through to the back of the nappy and as a result leak through to his clothes and the seat. I had to change him as soon as we arrived at every visit. I too also agree with the itching that the nappy is causing. We have never had any problems with nappy rash, I find the doctor's speel about nappy rash completely laughable.-This problem is certainly not nappy rash, these nappies are causing iching to the thighs where the "frill" of the nappy is, not the bottom. My little boy was constantly iching his thighs and pulling at his clothes around his thighs. I'm so happy that this report has been properly brought to people's attention and that when I told my partner that i was sure the nappies were different (and didn't have any stuffing in the back when I was sure there was before) I have been proven right and will now have a much happier baby in the [brand removed] nappies I've bought him!! I find it ridiculous that Pampers seem to believe that wee will not continue to soak to the back of the nappy if they take the stuffing out!!

I've been using pampers since my son was born last August and was using Active fit 4 up until about a month ago when like all other parents found a card inside a pack asking for feedback on there 'IMPROVED' nappy..huh, yeah right!!! In my experience, any Company using the word 'Improved' usually means someone has found away of cost savings for their Company but the consumer is still paying the same price for something that is doing half the job it use to do! I used the nappies to find that during the day I had to change my son more often and there seemed to be a strange smell. At night things got worse. My son sleeps through and usually by the morning I could always garantee his nappy would be very full front to back and the previous pampers would protect him. However, the new 'IMPROVED' nappy was hopeless, my son would be soaked and very unhappy. Lucky for me I still had some of the previous nappies and decided to do a test of the two types with the help of my son. After 2 weeks of alternating the nappies I found I was using an extra 3 nappies a day using the new 'IMPROVED' type and not getting the protection the older type offered, so how can they say it's good for the environment if I'm using more nappies per day? Plus when my son had an upset tummy the protection at the back of the nappy that has now gone, meant that I things got messy and clothes got ruined. If pampers say that they listen to what the parents have to say about their product, I think they are listening with deaf ears! The expression 'If it isn't broke, don't fix it' comes to mind!

My son actually slept for 18 hours at the weekend (due to illness) and the nappy, although very heavy and full, did not leak at all! I accidentally ran out in March and bought Pampers Active Fit in March from local chemist and each one leaked within a few hours of wearing. My son also got a rash (he is 18 months and has NEVER had nappy rash). My daughter then told me that her friends mum actually returned a packet of same nappies to Pampers the week before complaining of the same problem! Coincidence?? I think not!

I have always bought pampers, (did try another leading make when I couldn't get the pames active fit and wasn't impressed) bought these nappies for sometime now for my 2.5 yr old and 15 month old. However like your viewers and comments posted, have noticed in the last two weeks that daughter is waking up every night soaking wet and my son, who is in nappies during the day still, is also wet more often than not and leaking up his back. Additionally he has been suffering extreme nappy rash to the extent today where he has two blisters. This has never ever occurred before, even when he is teething, his nappies are changed as soon as he has a poo and I've always used [edited] (expensive but excellent stuff) as soon as there is any redness, it normally is clear by the next nappy. This hasn't occurred in the last week and as I say he now has two blisters, bless him. I need to buy nappies tomorrow and I WON'T be buying pampers. I am due another baby in a week and pampers will not be getting my business. PAMPERS need to listen to their customers.
