Nike T90 and Mercurials update

Remember last year's stinky trainers? And our stinky trainers update?

Watchdog is hearing from people who say they have very recently bought Nike T90 and Mercurial trainers and are having exactly the same stinky problem. Have you had the same experience?

Nike response

"The quality of our products and consumer satisfaction are of utmost importance to us and we continue to monitor this situation very closely. After the problem was first brought to our attention we changed our production process so that new-season football footwear product delivered to retailers from May 2009 onwards would not suffer from this problem*.

"We also notified our retail partners to accept returns with or without proof of purchase. We are confident that the production changes put in place have solved the issue and will continue to accept returns as per our original communication. The small number of customers who are experiencing the issue with their 'new' boots have most likely purchased old-season product that have been sitting in retailer inventories.

"We are still only seeing a very small number of cases where our football footwear products are affected by this problem. However, it is very important to recognise that any football shoe is a performance product and may therefore be affected by general footwear smells associated with sport and exercise.

"We also encourage people to care for their boots properly by cleaning them and ensuring they don't remain damp in sports bags after use. Nike stores and other retailers will continue to use discretion in assessing whether boots that are returned suffer from this problem, or are just old boots with the smells naturally associated over time with any shoe used for sport."

* To clarify, new-season product delivered to retailers from May onwards translates as footwear manufactured to launch at the start of the 2009/2010 football season.

they said they were the new nikes and they dont smell. he could smell was wet and damp. i was not pleased that they couldnt give me a new pair thats all i wanted i didnt want a refund. all they were interested in was that they could keep the sale and they were not cheap as my son is in a size 6 i got to pay adult prices.

I bought my 2 young sons Nike boots some 6 weeks ago, ready for the start of the new footy season. After only 1 use, the "cat-pee" smell came with avengence and now the boots are relegated to the greenhouse. Now I know why, i'll be taking the boots back at half term and the boys will be steering away from Nike for the forseeable future! More to save my house smelling like the local cats home than any other reason!

I bought my sona pair of th T90s two months ago and they have now been relegated to the shed as our poor cat was shouldering the blame until I saw the report last week. They smell sooooo bad. I am considering taking them back to [company removed] altghough the customer service I have recieved there in the past leads me to think they wouldn't take them back even if the whole store was evacuated due to the smell!

We returned a pair of Total 90 to [store removed] in Ipswich yesterday, with the receipt I might add but the assistant was rude and would not give us an exchange or refund until her area manager has inspected, the smell is horendous (we had to wrap them in 4 bags before we dare take them on the bus) As she couldn't tell us how soon they would be inspected we had to buy another pair of boots but be assured it was not from [store removed].

Having purchased a pair of T90 Laser2 on 10/10/09 they developed the distinctive 'cat' smell after less than 4 wears. Returning to the retail park armed with the receipt and copies of the Watchdog articles I asked for a refund or exchange for another type of boot. The assistant manager refused saying they smelt relatively inoffensive and it was just damp. When other members of the public backed me up because of the stench the story then changed and it was a strong amonia smell that was the problem. This battle went on for over an hour where upon a junior member of staff informed me they had a copy of the recall notice and instructions from Nike so I asked to see it to finally settle the matter. Suprise suprise they'd lost it but I wasn't allowed to see it anyway as it was confidential.
I am currently awaitng a response from Nike but I suggest you look inside the boot at the date of manufacture ([Unsuitable/Broken URL removed by Moderator] for details)as the retailer has also tried to tell me it's new stock when it obviously isn't. With retailers using any excuse to shirk theire responsibility maybe we should all take this matter up with Consumer Direct.

After searching the childrens bedroom again and finally coming across the bootbag in the wardrobe with a pungent odour, (which is now getting familiar to the nostrils), I decided to search out the words 'smelly trainers' and low and behold answered my own questions. This is my sons 4th pair of Nike football boots, the others were all banished to the rubbish bin almost with the cat (poor cats on here that took the blame)! I am astounded that the sports shops and newspapers have not recalled these boots as it appears to be a countrywide problem and reoccuring. I am now armed with the Nike statement from above, and ready to commence battle with my Nike shop. I will let you know the response I get accordingly.
