iPhone goes into a coma?

The adverts for iPhones are always telling us how great they are. They can surf the web, let you watch YouTube or feature films and of course they play your music and store your photos. They can even help you sort your finances. But what they don't tell us is that for some people the phones have started crashing and becoming unusable.

iPhone fans have been calling the problem 'coma mode' and when it happens the phone won't receive calls or emails. It becomes useless until the user puts it through a 'hard reboot', similar to shutting down and restarting a desk top computer when it crashes. But even worse, because this happens when the screen is locked, leaving it blank, the unlucky ones experiencing the problem don't know it's in 'coma mode' until they pick up the phone to check. They could go for hours without realising the phone's stopped working.

We met Paul Hutton, a self confessed iPhone addict. His iPhone had been suffering a string of glitches and falling in and out of 'coma mode' for weeks, sometimes two or three times a day. In fact the problem had got so bad he started carrying a spare phone around with him, just in case.

"With no warning or indication as to why it happened the wifi access failed completely", he said. "(The phone) was not working properly, it became unstable. People would dial in and the tone would be that of a phone that's been cut off and it would go to sleep. It would fall into what's referred to as a coma."

For the vast majority of iPhones 'coma mode' is not a problem but it causes great frustration for those users it does affect.

Michael Tyler, a world renowned telecommunications expert, told us he believes the problems come down to the applications or 'apps'that Apple - iPhone's manufacturer - are always banging on about. The apps can turn your phone into a GPS style map, help with D.I.Y around the house by turning the phone into a spirit level and can even allow you to drink a virtual pint of beer. But he says they can cause problems too.

"The difficulty is that it's a skittish kind of a thing," he said. "It doesn't happen every time, it just happens in certain circumstances depending on how much you have stored on the Apple phone, how many applications you have, which applications you have and which version of the operating system."

Michael likens the problem to a bouncer in a night club. When an app starts acting up it's like a commotion in a night club and the bouncer throws out those causing the trouble. But if the commotion grows the police are called in and they shut down the whole place. That, he says, is what the operating system is doing.

Apple has released a software fix in the form of a patch that can be downloaded from iTunes. The patch is called OS 3.1.2. If you plug you're iPhone into iTunes as normal it should solve the problem. If it doesn't, let us know.

Apple told Watchdog:
"iPhone OS Software Update 3.1.2 is a free update for all iPhone customers that provides a number of bug fixes. We encourage all iPhone customers to keep up to date with the latest version of iPhone OS via the free download from iTunes.

"For support please refer to: http://www.apple.com/uk/support/iphone/. For complete details on iPhone hardware service and repair, please see our iPhone Service FAQ.
"There are now more than 85,000 apps available... the number of apps on the iPhone does not affect its performance."

I too have a comatosed iphone and am utterly disgusted that apple cannot and still have not provided a good enough "fix" for this issue. My phone goes into a coma approx twice a day - even though I am not using ANY apps at the times it happens! It does it when the phone is ringing and makes it impossible to answer important calls, it often sits in a coma state in my handbag when on the blank "standby" screen.
BUT, this isn't the ONLY problem - I have a problem with my WIFI dropping constantly, I have to re-boot the phone using itunes everytime it drops and even then the re-connection will only last a maximum of 24hrs, there are reports on several websites that this is an issue with over-heating of the WIFI chip and suggestions are made to put it in the fridge!!!!!!
Please can apple be confronted about this - it's terrible, especially from a company of their reputation, and a second generation iphone shouldn't allow this to be happening!

    thanks

My Ipod Touch (basically the iPhone withouth the phone bit) went haywire AFTER installing the 3.1.2 software update. The Mail app just bombs straight out. and there's plenty of others around the world that have the same problem - just do a google search on "ipod Crashing Mail".

The big problem is that once you've installed 3.1.2 you cant (easily) go back to version 3.0 software that was lovely and stable.

Great gadget, not so sure i'll be updating the software again though. :(

No problems with the iPhone here. Mine is the 16Gb 3GS version. Haven't had any problems with any of the 3.x firmware versions although I did have a problem with my previous iPhone 3GS which would stop responding to the touchscreen unless you put it into sleep mode and then woke it up again. This was a hardware issue and that iPhone was simply replaced with one which didn't have this fault.

I also had an iPhone 3G before this and this also never had problems on the 3.x firmware prior to upgrading to the 3GS.

Sounds perhaps like there is a bad batch of hardware out there in my opinion.

So many problems with the handset that the staff at the Apple stores no longer even try to fix the problems & change the handset with no quibbles. It is a becoming a pain when you are unable to answer a call as the swipe is not recognised, calls not even showing on the handset and only notification being got is a voicemail popping up a few minutes later, phone not coming out of standby unless the Home button & power button are held down to reset the handset, phone not making calls most of the time when another handset on the same network is able to, WiFi connections being on & off even at full signal withing the router range, sounds not being made to notify of messages email s or calls nor the vibrate function working all the time, very poor battery life with the handset needing charging at least once a day - even if not been used (and with 3G, WiFi & PUSH switched off), and these are just the ones that I can think of off the top of my head! As the warranty runs out on 7 November (90 days now for the most recent replacement), it means that if it fails after the 90 days, I will be left without a phone I am paying for still through the contract, unless O2 allow me to upgrade early or I purchase a replacement/pay for a repair. I have never had so many problems with a phone (and I have had so many through having a past employment at O2) and still have smartphones that do the same job as the iPhone that were made in 2003 and still working without any problems at all! Everyone I know that has an iPhone has had nothing but problems and software fixes are simply not the fixes that are required at all!

Blinking iphone. It's got progressively worse since I bought it a year ago. Each new update brings new problems rather than solves them. Last night I lost an email. I wrote it and hit send, the screen went black and then returned to the home screen. I thought that's unusual and checked - no email sent. This is after I updated to 3.1.2 the latest software! And this is a standard Apple application not even a 3rd party app. Loads of other problems with the phone freezing and other apps crashing. Also not fixed by the latest release.

I used to have windows mobile phones - I gave up on them because they crashed and could hardly make phone calls. My iphone is getting to that stage now.

-it should have been the first thing you tried.

As for 'rolling back' to an earlier iPhone os simply hold down 'alt' key whilst clicking the 'update' button then select a ipsw file. If you no-longer have any of these on your harddisk try googling "iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw" without the quotation marks.
If this is too complex then maybe you should stick to last centuries' tech.

tiptopAllison, it is just a shame that Apple don't release updates every two to three weeks, and do so as & when they decide to. Both of the handsets that I have had replaced (the last replacement was 2 days ago after the latest 3.1.2 update did not solve the problems it claimed to!)have been updated with the latest software & updates as soon as they hit the Apple servers, yet the problems are still there (and sometimes MORE problems). Everyone I know personally (all over the World) are having the same problems and are also going to be replacing their handsets with a non-Apple product as soon as they can. I was going to get a couple of 3GS handsets very shortly but have now started to look at other smartphones such as the Palm Pre (which is launched in UK tomorrow) and several of the Windows Mobile and Android based handsets (which all have been getting good feedback from the vast majority of their users).
As Apple have said about apps causing the problems, as the iPhone cannot run one app and then another without closing the first down (unless jailbroken) or within a phone call, it is not the apps causing the problems like WatchDog's "so-called expert" claimed, but a operating system or hardware issue, both of which are Apple's domain to sort out. As the iPhone OS only works on Apple hardware (iPhone 3G/S or iPod Touch), Apple cannot blame third parties for the problems as they are the ones that have written the code specifically for the hardware they supply.

The problem is to do wiv RAM memory bein used up when you open an app. To properly close down an app don't just press the home button as it will still remain running using your iphone memory(RAM). The way to shut down apps correctly and fully i've discovered is to hold down the sleep button until slide to power off appears then release it & hold down the home button to shut down the app. This releases the extra RAM used up opening & running the app & returns you to the home screen.

Lets step aside from the Apple debate for a moment and ponder the fact that we (I use that in its loosest sense) do not raise an eyebrow when our Apple brothers in arms, the mighty home desktop machines and laptops perpetually fail and cause untold losses in time and money.

Strangely it is acceptable for traditional home computers to require a forceful restart, so lets not get on our over sized cheval when it come to mobile devices please.

I rang Apple and was advised that they could do some thing for me, I took it to the Apple store in Southampton, where they exchanged it for a new (reconditioned) iphone, still the mms settings problem existed, along with the coma mode problems, after doing the most recent update.

Spoke to [brand removed] again, as did the very helpful Marco and Ben from Apple, who found [brand removed] to be totally useless in the area of customer service. Have for the last few days finally had no problems with the mms settings resetting, still keeping an eye on it, and reporting to Ben and Marco and problems if they occur again.

I am totally hacked off with the problems I have had from [brand removed] in regards to the problems, that I am seriously thinking of getting rid of the iphone and moving away from [brand removed] as a service provider, as they seem to always make out that it is nothing to do with them, passing the buck all the time.

Although we have experienced to 'Coma mode' as described in your programme our bigger problem has been with actually receiving and placing calls and texts. The phone will show a strong signal but it will be impossible to make or receive calls and texts for hours at a time. We have resorted to using our land lines in the office at times. This problem can happen 2 or 3 times a week and has become more commonplace in recent weeks. i have also been in large groups all with i phones and all of us have been unable to make or receive calls and/or texts despite all phones showing good signals. This would suggest that the problem may not lie with wholly with the phone but with O2? Perhaps apples tie up with O2 only has made the IPhone a victim of it's own success and that the numbers of people using the phone particularly in city areas means that the demand is too great for O2's cell infrastructure to cope and the band width too narrow? We work in a large office building with large corporate tenants on other floors. We have checked with them and other occupiers all report similar problems with O2. (Note this problem is not just restricted to this building but a large area around Liverpool street. Note also that rebooting the iPhone does not seem to solve this problem when it occurs.

Sadly, many regrets for buying it without proper research.

I've been developing games for various mobile phones for nearly 9 years and for the iPhone for over a year and while I can sympathise with the people who are experiencing this problem (I'm not on my 3Gs) I have to ask what are the qualifications of your expert to comment?

Does he actually have any knowledge of the iPhone platform and the way applications run on the iPhone? His explanation would be more fitting to a Windows Mobile or Symbian device. The other platforms allow multi-tasking and you can get issues from running out of memory due to there being too many open applications.

On iPhone if you can't see the application then it's not running (expcept special cases for email, web browsing and iPod) so it doesn't matter how many apps are installed the only way they could be related to the problem would be if any one of *many* apps could cause it or if everyone with the problem was running the same group of faulty apps. Even if there was such a problem the device has several, very effective, ways of killing a rouge application. I've seen it in action many times when a new game hasn't worked correctly and I've never had a situation where it did more the politely closed my application and returned me to the launcher.

Obviously this is a real issue, Apple have even shipped an update to try and fix it. But comments such as those from your expert, which seem to be uninformed about the details of the platform, bring nothing useful the the discussion and instead create confusion for the users of the device.

Surely it would be better to give more time to possible solutions such as the software update or Apple customer care rather than spurious speculation with no evidence to back it up.

Stop scare-mongering - this is a fault which, as they always do, Apple WILL fix very very soon - they have their reputation to uphold, they won't just ignore this issue like other corporations.

"I have just returned from a 125 mile round trip to sort out my non-revivable Iphone 3GS! I purchased the phone 3 months ago, from an independent Apple Retail store - [shop removed]. Having downloaded the new software the day before I went on holiday, the phone drifted off into a coma that I couldn't get it out of. Being phoneless throughout my holiday. I contacted the [shop removed] when I returned from my travels, to be told they could not help me and that my problem now lay with Apple! (I knew it didn't they sold me the phone!) Anyway, I spoke to Apple who advised me to go to make an appointment at the nearest Apple shop (125 miles away) where someone looked at the phone and also couldn't revive it! At this point my 3 month old phone was replaced with a "re-manufactured" phone - as this was the best they could do! Think I'll hold off investing in an Apple Mac!"

I have had an iphone for almost a year now. Although the bat dies after a day, I surf the net get my email, play on apps, text people and use it as a phone. I defy anyone to tell me what phone does this and doe not need charging that often.

The Wifi crashes all the time. Requiring me to switch off the Wifi and back, then back on again 5 mins later. And it works. What a pain
The phone will constantly display voicemail and not actually ring what a pain.

Having had old computers etc I understand all to well the issues with RAM. This is the stuff that all the applications use to run. If you max it out you hit issues. i.e. got an app designed for the iPhone 3Gs on a iPhone 3G, it will work BUT when have email set to auto (a mail program runs in the back ground), you have just been surfing the net and maybe you just sent a text. These all sit in the background running. Then you fire up your app. Heay presto it crashes. OR. You have been doing all of the above, but instead of starting the app you sleep the phone, then while asleep a push email comes and it is to big to be handled so crash.

What we have is a mini computer running on a phone, try finding an app like "memory info" or "free mem", anything that looks at RAM. Then fire it up if it is close to max you are going to get a slow phone, possibly a crash.

What Apple should do and I mean REALLY SHOULD DO. Is
1/ Give a proper manual. That tells you what the phone does.
2/ If they are giving out a mini computer give the tools to work with it. A systems button with drive space/ ram usage.

Oh yeah Drive space. if it is to full you will see issues, keep at least 10% of the space free. This is all basic stuff to techys but not all the people buying the iPhone are.

Hope this helps. And the 2 things above would change my experience ten fold.

I think it's taken far too long to get apple into the spotlight over the problems the iPhone has had. Although Apple are correct, the number of apps does not affect the phone in this manner. Your "expert" is completely wrong as the applications are not capable of running independently or as a background process when you are not using them. I should know, I code and work with other coders on iPhone applications.

However, I am sadly on my Fourth iPhone. iPhone number one suffered from a faulty charger, which caused the battery to overheat and make the external shell brittle. Inevitably it cracked, and Apple happily replaced the device.

The second one suffered from the iPhone coma, but with mobile network dropouts, random rebooting, and the screen freezing. Apple again agreed that it was faulty and replaced the device.

Number three came back to me, but with rebooting, and failing to startup and the GPS was failing,. Apple again replaced it stating it was faulty. Of course, I am now out of warantee, and unable to insure my £400 iPhone. It's terrible, the product quality is shocking at this stage and frankly it's a disgrace.

I have now sought action to get a pro-rata refund, but it's about time Apples "duty of care" was brought into the spotlight about it's "goods of satisfactory quality"... and I should point out, I love my iPhone, even now, but it's getting silly!

I have an Iphone 3gS 32Gb latest software update as of last Wednesday and, unfortunately am a member of the Coma Mode Club. However, I can only remember mine going into Coma mode when using the Wunder Radio ap for any length of time. Also each time it dies, it takes longer before I am able to reboot (over 24 hours last time). It's a real pity because otherwise I'm happy with the iphone - especially the ipod part of it. The music quality when played through quality headphones is truly amazing compared with my old ipod.

I've had the iphone 3G for about a year now, and I've always said it's the best phone I've ever had.. until the last couple of weeks. The main issue I have is that the phone signal disappears so frequently I cant hold down a conversation without having to wait for the phone signal to come back and phone the person back again and again. Of course this means people are finding it hard to get hold of me, and also I am unable to use the phone for it's purpose! The recent update has actually made this worse! Now the phone wont hold a signal at all without the 3G turned on.

My iphone only went into 'coma mode' once, for about 24 hours, that was the start of the problem. It has had the 'no signal' issue ever since that time.

I have always recommended iphone to everyone but now I'm getting very irritated by it. I'm even looking around at other phones again which I havn't done in a year!

Right first of all, the iphone OS only runs one application at a time, unless it has be jail-breaked, therefore the expert on this program has no clue, the should have got an software engineering to speak, the app store have to examine each application that it to be added to the list of downloadable apps. Due to the demand they can only check that it breaks no laws, and does not interrupt the core OS services. The only problem i can see with apps is inefficient code, using up all resources.

Another reason why the iphone may have this problem, if you have ever looked at the recommendations of the apple documentation, which is when ever you install a new application. The reason for this is to allow all the resources to be initialised in the system call tables, therefore the phone will know what is needed at what times for the applications, this will remove the problem of the applications fighting for resources, just because the application is closed does not mean that its not using hardware resources.

As for the wireless system problems, this is most likely a hardware problem, it does not mean that the iphone is rubbish it is most likely a bad batch of phones, just consider the numbers, over 50 millions units are in use, one bad batch is not really that bad? Apple will happily replace all iphones that have a hardware fault unless it has been jail-breaked, or tampered with in any way.

And shame on you BBC asking for expert advice from some one who does not know anything about this field, just because it has phone functions does not mean its in the realm of telecommunication experts, as the OS, applications run separate from the phone features, you should have asked some one with a knowledge of software and hardware, hence why I'm writing this note, while writing this to defend on of the companies that has changed the phone market and computing market, I am also writing an application for the iphone.

    If you don't understand what you are doing with your hardware, or if you don't understand what you phone / computer or any electronic device is doing? Here is a check list for you;

    Read the documentation first.
    Google the problem
    Consult the manufacturer
If you still don't totally understand your hardware, then downgrade to something your happy with!

My daughter is on her 2nd Iphone. Not happy that Apple won't give a new one year guarantee when replacing an Iphone (they say the guarantee runs out from the original Iphone so only got 1 month left). This one again keeps freezing/stops working for say 5 minutes. She tried the download suggested last week on Watchdog but it has not made alot of difference. Not happy.

I have had my I-phone for 3 months and like most at first thought it was great but now i would do anything to get rid of it.
Purchased through [company removed], after 2 months the screen went black and nothing could be done, returned to [the store] to be told it would be 28 days. I was told no courtesy phone was available and that they were not obliged to do this. So i have had to purchase a phone until mine is returned. The phone was returned within the week as it was replaced due to a "technical problem".
I then asked the assistant if my apps and numbers would still be stored, to which she said they would, im sure we can all guess they were not there.
The new phone has since frozen and certain parts will not work so once again i am without a phone, and once resolved soon to be without all my numbers again.
I would strongly recommend two things dont buy a i-phone and if you do, then dont buy an i-phone from [shop removed] once its sold to you they have absolutely no interest in you and this will only irritate you more.
Personally i think it is a joke that they can tie people in to long contracts when they fail to provide the service, as they are ultimately letting us down. Also the fact you gain no benefit in using the [shop removed] so go direct, hopefully some may read this and take note but i imagine that is highly unlikely.
