After our report on the scratched games discs for Microsoft Xbox 360s, we heard of all sorts of ways to get the scratches off the discs - from nail polish remover to toothpaste. None worked - but then we got a tip off about another solution.
A special machine in some Blockbusters stores can remove the scratches with a quick polish. It takes just a couple of minutes and costs just a couple of pounds.
We took three games with scratches on to one of these stores, and, sure enough, all three were fixed by the machine - even the one with a deeper scratch.
Some other games stores have similar machines, so even though this doesn't get Microsoft off the hook, and we can't promise that it'll work with every disk, it does mean you may not have to fork out £40 to replace your favourite game.

i'm pretty sure that all BB stores offer this service - and they only charge a couple of quid. most chains of DVD/game stores have these machines - just do what i did and type 'disc repair centre' into a search engine. the first website has a map that you can type your post code into and it brings up a list of shops near you.
