Roadworks drive you potty
I remember the seasoned hack peering over his glasses and, taking a break from pounding at his typewriter keys, he had decided to impart some wisdom.
'Nothing gets them more angry than roadworks.'
That was it - his tip on stories that appealed to his readers. That was nearly 20 years ago - And here we are today.
Some things never change.
Last night, I was watching Julie Bradbury's Railway Walks, [episode 2, Discovering Snowdonia] in which she's walking the pathways left by Beeching.
What a different place we'd have today in NE Wales if we were still using Mold's train platform and all those neighbouring stations like Llong and Afonwen, and maybe today we could have been utilising a revitalised Buckley-Deeside line or even the route of the tramways at Ceiriog Valley, Cefn and Rhos.
Maybe there's still some hope if The Glyn Valley Tramway Trust get their way - but surely it will only ever be a quaint attraction...

I exchanged a few emails with the highways agency regarding the time it was taking to lift the 40mph limit on the new stretch of dual carriageway from Queensferry to the M56.
Evidently, the restriction was there to protect the workforce in the road - fine explanation, I hear you say.
However to ensure minimal disruption to traffic the only work carried out was done overnight and, at this time, done behind crash barriers and was infact tree planting and the like.
I deduced that the road contractors had decided that it was too much work to take down the 40mph signs during the day or had been obliged to leave the signs there for the benefit of the new 'health and safety' industry that has sprung up to provide more work for under utilised public servants.
Anyway, the road is complete now and looks and runs fine until Aston Hill. What a debarkle that is !
Our first bank holiday of the year is nearly upon us so our tourist traffic will come pouring down this new route with eyes full of wonder at how well the North Walains have done in creating this new route .... until they hit the four lane into two bottleneck that is Aston Hill.
They will then sit there creating a vast cloud of smog for the successful Aston Hill resident protest group to breathe in as they reflect on the success of stopping the Flintshite superhighway becoming the gateway to North Wales it was supposed to be !

Judged Red. Aston Hill residents are entitled to their protest just as you are, they have been more persuasive. If there wasn't a sensible alternative Aston Hill itself would be blocked by roadworks now, even as we speak and the residents would be subjected to even more pollution, during and after the roadworks. Why have a lovely to look at brand new bridge and not use it for its intended purpose, ie. take traffic further along the A55 and away from Queensferry and Aston Hill via a sensible route? Additional benefit, reduce danger at the perilous Wrexham and Mold junctions above Aston Hill which are also contributory congestion points.

Bill336's
Aston Hill residents have been more persuasive as they have galvanised voting opinion. This doesn't mean they carry the mandate of public opinion.
I do agree that the Connahs Quay route WAS a viable alternative until the infrastructure spend was incurred on repurchase orders on the houses that sat in the way of the proposed route.
What we have now is a blight on Queensferry and an impasse instead of bypass !

Judged Red. Oh the irony - Check the proximity of the r key to the t key on the keyboard you use!!!
Anyway, whilst its satisfying to believe that the general public can influence decisions, for the record the ridiculous scale of the A494 "improvements" were thrown out by an Independent Inspector, not a protest group.
This could all be sorted by us clubbing together to buy land from the duke of westminster to allow the a55 to be improved into the arterial route into Wales it was intended to be.

Judged Red. All sides had the same opportunity to express their opinions, even yours, to the INDEPENDENT inspector. Just reflect a little upon how persuasive the objectors must have been. How often do you see objections being recognised in similar situations? Rarely if ever! The acknowledged blight on Queensferry could be resolved by support for, and lmplementation of, the sensible, cheaper, new bridge route alternative. Are the superfluous road-widening funds not available for this? In any case, how do you expect W.A.Gov. or Westminster to stump up finance while FCC are frittering away millions, yes millions, trying to silence whistle-blowers, but that's another story.
