Oi! Pick up your rubbish!

Further to last night's Panorama programme - about how Britain has become one big rubbish tip - today's Daily Post echoes the findings of the episode, and says that our local authorities will not be taking a tough stand on people who leave mess in their wake.

It seems litter is something we all hate with no shortage of stories and complaints about the issue [Google News search tag litter] so why is it such a problem and why do so many people do it?

One suggestion that came out of last night's programme was to reintroduce the deposit scheme on bottles etc - a good idea?

Or what about the other idea - already employed in some places: Introduce a public address system in our town centres where CCTV operators were able to call to litter bugs to pick up their discarded chip wrappers and cigarette butts.

Agree entirely with the Panarama progamme on litter and as Bill mentioned in the presentation there is a spin off to keeping our environment clean and tidy. Governments and local government have a big responsibility and can only improve things by enforcement of the existing laws.
We should start by cleaning our cities especially London! Local Authorities attitude to litter and waste management is not helping we need a bit more zero tollerance approach to litter and the perpetrators especially the louts who booze and stuff fast food down into their fat bellies in public!

Thanks for your thoughts KandMJay. Eating in public is another thing that really gets people going here in NE Wales, especially Wrexham! Take a look...
