UPDATE: Sculpture being unveiled on Sat Aug 16 11am

Superlambanana at Wepre Park

One the face of it, he doesn't look too bad, maybe a little plain - but the kids don't seem afraid of him, so what's all the fuss been about?

But this is our first viewing of the Superlambanana which has been causing a stir since it was announced it was to be sited temporarily on top of Moel Famau, bringing some art to the landscape.

This is the first of a collection of photos of a mini version of Liverpool's iconic sculpture, which - love or hate the idea - after being covered in art by locals at Wepre Park will be moved to Moel Famau in August.

You've only got to search for Superlambanana on flickr.com [3,074 photos at the last count] to see how much love there is for the art work, versions of which are popping up all over the place as part of an art project for Liverpool Capital of Culture.

Thanks to David Shiel, Countryside Officer Clwydian Range AONB, for supplying the photos

I grew up in North Wales, but have been living in Liverpool for the last few years, and I'm amazed at the constant stream of negative comments from the people of North Wales on the subject of the Superlambanana (which, let's face it, is only going to be sited at Moel Famau for a matter of weeks).

People are complaining about how much money it's costing the tax payers of North Wales (which as far as I know is zero), how the sculpture has no connection to North Wales (they should look it up) and how it will have no benefit for the people of North Wales. Well the kids in the photo look pretty excited about it to me, and I'm sure they'll be even more excited and inspired once they've finished decorating and personalising their sculpture and it arrives at Moel Famau for all to see.

Is it just a lack of vision on the part of all those criticising the project, or is it the infamous Welsh disdain of anything English - would they be happier with a Superdragonleek??

I've been to see the superlambanana (or supermoelfamaulambanana!) on Moel Famau, and don't see what the fuss is about. It's only measures about 4 feet by 5 feet, and is only visible once you reach the Jubilee tower on the mountain top-its not on an Angel of the North scale!

A positive aspect of the location of this "smflb" is that families will get plenty of fresh air and exercise getting to see it!

Someone said that it would have been better sited in a town location. It would probably have been damaged or even stolen in a few days!

If children like it, so be it, regardless what it is. It doesn't distract from the marvellous scenery and views. If you don't like it, then ignore it!

My only criticism is that Moel Famau was missing the "u" on the information board, becoming supermoelfamalambanana!

Is it art? No idea, but I rather thought bananas were yellow (unless this is GM!).
