A documentary focusing on the landscape and community of mid Wales village Trefeurig has beaten the likes of District 9, Katalin Varga and Synecdoche, New York to win the Guardian First Film award.

Sleep Furiously, directed by Gideon Koppel, was funded by the UK Film Council and the Film Agency for Wales. As the Western Mail reported, Koppel said of his win: "I am absolutely delighted. I think that there is a great pleasure that cinema of a more lyrical and poetic nature still has a place and can still compete with big budget, more digestible forms of work."

I was lucky enough to see this film by chance at its first showing in Aberystwyth when the audience was made up of the villagers, although I was unaware of the fact until the lights came up at the end-by then I had started clapping because it was such a moving and exciting experience to see an accurate and affectionate portrait of my part of Wales in truly cinematic language. Since then I've taken two lots of friends to see it and bought a copy to lend to the uninitiated!

Hi Victoria. What a nice story. I've not seen the film - or even heard of it before now - but I'll keep an eye out for it.

Will it be on television anytime?

Gideon Koppel said in The Guardian recently "It still hasn't been booked for Welsh television..."
