Soundtrack festival: music for the ears... and eyes

This Wednesday sees the launch of the second Soundtrack Film and Music Festival in Cardiff.

Taking over venues across the city, through until Sunday night, it's a potent and heady mix of the cinematic and symphonic, which shows how film and music, at their best, compliment each other perfectly.

Tim Powell, the event's director has really pulled the stops out this year, with some fantastic live gigs lined up at the Coal Exchange.

Firstly, on the 20th, we have Wales' finest, Super Furry Animals performing songs from their back catalogue, while the following night sees musical icon, and co-founder of the Velvet Underground, John Cale, performing his album Paris 1919 in its entirety.

And as if that wasn't enough to make you drool with anticipation, Cale will also discuss his career on a separate evening, followed by a screening of American Psycho, for which he composed the score (and if you're looking for another Welsh angle here, the film also stars Haverfordwest-born Christian Bale, in one of his most impressive screen performances).

Alongside these truly outstanding events there'll be a chance to see Julien Temple's latest movie documentary about the much missed 'pub rock legends' Doctor Feelgood, in Oil City Confidential. And even Super Furries frontman, Gruff Rhys, has set foot into the world of film, as we'll see in his new 'rockumentary', Seperado.

For those, wanting something a little more classical in its nature, the festival opens with a screening of Powell and Pressburger's 1948 gem, The Red Shoes. While a few days later, horror fans will be treated to a double bill of The Quatermass Experiment and To the Devil a Daughter, as part of an evening discussing music in the Hammer horror films (can't wait to see that one).

The event closes with a sneak preview of Benny And The Bull, a new comedy film from Paul King, the director of The Mighty Boosh TV series - and apparently you can expect the same level of ingenious weirdness and belly laughs from his latest work.

So all in all, I think we have quite a winner this coming week, ladies and gentlemen.  And once my broadcast duties in North Wales are done, I shall be pegging it back to Cardiff for a feast of sound and visuals.  And should you want to come along, then all the relevant info you'll need can be found at soundtrackfilmfestival.com. Enjoy.
