I was away last week filming in New Quay, Ceredigion for the new series of Weatherman Walking, following in the footsteps of Dylan Thomas.
Thankfully the weather was kind to us, yes a bit more sunshine would have been nice but at least it was dry with little wind which made filming easier.
Yesterday was much cloudier for the first day of meteorological winter and it’s a similar story today with high pressure over us bringing dry and settled weather. Little change is expected tomorrow which is good news for the Royal Welsh Winter Fair in Llanewedd near Builth Wells but there is a risk of morning fog.
High pressure is moving away to the east and a cold front will move south on Wednesday bringing a spell of rain in the morning followed by sunshine.
Thursday will start dry but another more active cold front will move south during the day bringing rain. It will also become windy with strong to gale force winds. The strongest winds in northern Britain and Met Office warnings have been issued.
The rain may briefly turn to snow on higher ground before it clears in the evening. Thursday will end drier but much colder with Arctic winds.A weather chart valid until midday on 5 December
Friday will be cold with a mixture of sunshine and a few hail/snow showers. Most of the showers will be in north Wales feeding in from the Irish Sea with some accumulations of snow likely on the hills and mountains. Elsewhere it will be largely dry and sunny in the south.
Over the weekend, high pressure will move in from the west so becoming settled with a little sunshine and overnight frost.
The cold snap will be short-lived, as during the second week of December it looks like it will turn milder. There is no sign of a big freeze as suggested by some media outlets. The Met Office winter forecast does suggest a slightly higher chance it will be colder than average but long range forecasts are not that reliable yet so we shall have to wait and see.
