Pontio, the new arts and innovation centre planned by Bangor University, has received a massive boost with the announcement of a funding injection worth £27.5million.

The university unveiled plans for the project earlier this year, which is set to include a 550-seat theatre, cinema space, studio theatre and an outdoor amphitheatre, plus social facilities such as bars, dining and family friendly park areas.

The Pontio project will receive £12.5m from the European Regional Development Fund, and £15m from the Welsh Assembly Government towards the £37m cost. Other funds will come from the Arts Council of Wales and the university.

I am really pleased this project has been given the funding ,it will help Bangor in the long run to be amongst the front runners , after the project has been built the economy of Bangor and the surrounding areas will all benefit, its a shame though some of the leading building contractors in Wales wont be building but the University want to be as fair as possible to the rest of the UNITED KINGDOM and the building will be done by English based consortium's
From recollection the previous theatre that stood on part of the site was built by Watkin Jones one of Wales's most successful and largest building companies who actually in this recession have continued to employ local contractors and many employees from all over the principality ,unfortunately despite their wealth of knowledge they are unable to compete with the English counterparts, lets just place a little hope the companies who are successful will carry on the trend and engage some local labour
