March is upon us, and, while I am loath to even whisper the words for fear of a change, it would appear that spring has sprung. I’ve taken the plunge and removed the winter lining from my parka and have even ventured out to rehearsal sans socks.

Tonight, in the lovely acoustic of St David's Hall, we perform Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony with our principal conductor, Thomas Søndergård. I love playing and listening to Mahler's music, and this is my first Mahler Nine.

Recently we’ve been in a busy patch of dual purpose sessions – working with the Nimbus label for commercial release, but you will also be able to hear the works that we record on BBC Radio 3.

It was so nice to be back on the concert stage on Friday night and to see such a wonderful crowd filling out St David’s Hall. It is a deceptively large auditorium - you don’t appreciate how large it is until you see it with a full house.

Those who have followed this blog for some time will know that I love Christmas. Not only do I have a Christmas jumper (it has Rudolph on it), but I also have a Christmas themed thermal top - which is much cooler than it sounds.

As I mentioned last week, we here at BBC NOW HQ are in the midst of a recording session marathon. Last week was the glitzy TV stuff (more Atlantis, and the Doctor Who Christmas special), and this week we have been recording for both Radio 3, and also for commercial release.

This week saw the beginning of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales Recording Marathon. That's not actually an official thing, I made it up. It should be a real thing.
