    1 June is the start of meteorological summer in the northern hemisphere. Although people often call it Flaming June we don't always get endless days of sunshine and soaring temperatures like we did during the heatwave summer of 1976.

    Normally May is the driest of the spring months in Wales with an average rainfall of 85.9mm, but this year it's been wetter with 124mm of rain, 45% more than usual.

    Usk in Monmouthshire was the warmest place in Wales yesterday with a top temperature of 19.8°C. Mind you, the nights have been cool this week, especially in land. In Bala in Gwynedd the temperature dropped to 1.9°C on Tuesday night with a ground frost.

    It felt more like autumn than late spring over the weekend with low pressure bringing strong to gale force winds, heavy rain and blustery showers.     The weather was a bit mixed over the bank holiday weekend with the south and east enjoying the best of the sunshine. Since then, of course, the weather has turned cooler and more unsettled, but at least the gardens and allotments have had a watering.

    Tomorrow any rain in the north will clear, leaving dry and bright weather and sunny spells. However, showers are likely and these will become more widespread during the afternoon.

    People often talk about April showers and there's a nice proverb from 1886 that states: "March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers."

    Showers can occur at any time but there are specific reasons why April might be more associated with clear, sunny mornings and stormy afternoons.
