The weather has been very up and down so far this month. There's been some lovely sunshine but it's been wet at times with heavy showers, thunderstorms and hail.

1 June is the start of meteorological summer in the northern hemisphere. Although people often call it Flaming June we don't always get endless days of sunshine and soaring temperatures like we did during the heatwave summer of 1976.

Usk in Monmouthshire was the warmest place in Wales yesterday with a top temperature of 19.8°C. Mind you, the nights have been cool this week, especially in land. In Bala in Gwynedd the temperature dropped to 1.9°C on Tuesday night with a ground frost.

The weather was a bit mixed over the bank holiday weekend with the south and east enjoying the best of the sunshine. Since then, of course, the weather has turned cooler and more unsettled, but at least the gardens and allotments have had a watering.

According to the Met Office April has been a warmer than average month in Wales, with the north being drier but parts of the south have been slightly wetter than normal.

As part of the Weatherman Walking series of programmes, I have walked in the same footsteps as Dylan Thomas. To be honest, I didn’t realise he wrote so many poems. I knew about his work Under Milk Wood from my school days but hadn’t really revisited his poems since.

A blustery wind made it feel cold yesterday, but thankfully the wind is lighter today and it’s a lovely start to the week, thanks to high pressure centred close to Ireland.

People often talk about April showers and there's a nice proverb from 1886 that states: "March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers."
