Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so far for most of Wales, with temperatures more typical of May and warmer than some resorts in the Mediterranean and plenty more dry and settled weather to come.

This winter has been very wet and mild - in fact Hawarden in Flintshire was the warmest place in the UK last Sunday with a top temperature of 13.6°C, several degrees above the average which is nearer 7°C.

The weather has been a bit better this week - less stormy and wet with a weaker jet stream. The dry spells in between the rain have been longer and this has allowed river levels to generally fall in Wales.

Another two Atlantic storms hit Wales last week causing yet more damage and disruption. The Met Office issued a rare red warning last Wednesday, the first of its kind since January 2013.

Yet another deep Atlantic low brought more heavy rain, showers and gales over the weekend. Exposed coasts and hills in the south and west bore the brunt of the severe gales.

This winter has been exceptional so far. We've had the windiest December since 1969, followed by the wettest January in Wales for 40 years.

Yesterday, 2 February, was Candlemas Day.
Candlemas is a traditional Christian festival and it was the custom on Candlemas Day for clergy to bless candles and distribute them to people. A lighted candle was placed in churches and windows to brighten up the dark winter nights.

According to the Met Office this January is the wettest in Wales for 40 years! 247mm (9.72 inches) of rain have fallen so far. This figure is an average for the whole of Wales.

There was a brief window of dry weather and sunshine on Saturday but it didn’t last, with yet more heavy rain, showers and strong to gale force winds over the weekend. The highest gust recorded on Saturday was 75mph at Aberporth, Ceredigion and 70mph at Aberdaron, Gwynedd on Sunday.

Low pressure has brought some heavy showers over the past couple of days but at least there’s been some dry weather and sunshine in between. However, more widespread rain on the way tomorrow as fronts move north across the UK.

After a stormy start to 2014, the weather has been a little kinder to us recently. There was more rain on Sunday afternoon but Saturday turned out lovely with some beautiful winter sunshine. I took advantage of the fine weather and went back to Merthyr Tydfil to do the walk I filmed for the new series...

As expected it has turned milder today but will become wetter and windier again. There will be some heavy rain, especially in the south and west with strong to gale force southerly winds; gusts between 50 and 70mph in places.

It’s been wet and very windy at times recently. The wind reached storm force 10 at Capel Curig in Snowdonia last Saturday with a gust of 85mph but despite the wind and rain it’s been very mild. Last Thursday Llanfairfechan in Gwynedd recorded a temperature of 17 °C. Not quite a record for December...

The reason for the winter warmth is down to the wind direction with southerly winds carrying mild air northwards from Spain and Morocco.

Severe weather has been causing problems across the UK today, especially in north and east but also on the north Wales coast with some homes flooded.
