Would you like a weather forecast like Radio 4's PM prog?

Victoria Derbyshire | 08:52 UK time, Friday, 16 October 2009

Weather mapOur colleagues at PM have introduced a new style of weather forecast. The reason? A number of their listeners found they couldn't remember the details of the conventional forecast. Have a look at Eddie Mair's blog. John Hammond from the Met Office is going to try it out today just before 10.30.

Also on today's programme - we hope to speak to the Schools Secretary Ed Balls, to react to the huge review of primary school education which suggests that children shouldn't begin formal lessons until they are 6. Plus the 17 year old British tennis star who's about to turn professional, Heather Watson.

And I'll speak to the 24 year old woman who's about to get married - but before she does she's going to have an operation to be sterilised. Can you know at such a young age that you really don't want children later in life?

Forceast eh? What's that then? A new wind strength definition? Is it less than a Force One or more than a Force Ten?

Look forward to listening to your interview with Heather Watson - we're all very proud of her here in Guernsey.

If the woman wants to be sterilised let her get on with it. It's her choice, her life and nothing to do with the rest of us.

I tend to agree, Zelda although I think this woman doth protest too much. I think there must be some sort of underlying mental health problem - the comments she made that every month before her period she is filled with dread and horror in case she is pregnant - surely that's not normal, the reaction I mean, even if she has made the decision to not want children?

When I was in my mid-20s I didn't want children and told everyone (probably more for the effect than anything else - I've subsequently gone on and had three...)

Zelda - come on, it's a 'media-decision' - an article in the press (well feMail) and an appearance on r5live. Let her have her 15 minutes.
I knew that I would never eat cheese when I was in my twenties but I missed out on the press coverage................

She's probably got a book out!

As to the weather forecast, regionalised? It will still be wrong! ;)

btw Is it just me or are the BBC pages taking for ever to loads this morning?

Damn! They've corrected the headline and now my initial post doesn't make sense!

Have had probs too, Zelda - very slow.

They've not named the two blobs at the bottom of the map. They're the Channel Islands and we have weather too!

If I wanted the weather like they do it on R4s PM programme, I'd listen to R4, specifically the PM programme. I thought this was R5L? If it want's be a clone of R4 then why do we need it? The BBC is moving out of London to save money. It could save even more if it axed a station that was the same as another station. What's wrong with being different? We're not sheep, y'know!!!

you do know that richard goldstones investigation of the gaza conflict was passed by the UNHCR today. shockingly the usa voted no whilst israel made threats against the peace process and its allies.

for a news station there has been very little coverage of this issue that finds israel and palestinians allegedly guilty of war crimes.

And that has what to do with the format of the weather forecast exactly...?

Cheap shots by Lancastrian Vicky today re Yorkshire. This from a Bury girl where she stands the chance of being burnt as a witch if she turns on a light.
The 2 nearest places mentioned in this dogs dinner of a forecast to where i live are Birmingham 93 miles away and Manchester just shy of 50 miles away and with the Pennines between me and it how the heck can i get an idea of what the weather near me is going to do with such distance and natural obstacles! Sheffield my nearest city and i think if memory serves the 4th largest city in England is routinely ignored by the Beeb no matter what the subject.
