Sounds like a real charmer! Looking at all his previous convictions, yet he has only been to prison once, says volumes about our tragic 'justice' system
Marlon King used his "status" as a Premiership footballer to attack a young woman. It is justice that his "status" should be removed afetr he has completed his sentence. Let him re-earn the respect of a society he has harmed.
Please repeat his previous convictions and restate each time you mention his name that he is on the sex offenders register, then let's talk about his wife and children...I think not. Role model, an icon for the BNP no doubt(sic).
14 chances for Marlon King??? He is a repeat offender and could have received a discetionary life sentence, so why did the judge not give a serial offender the maximum? The arrogance of his defending agent said everything about the culture of money and not a thing about the clture of justice, for King's victim here or in the past and inevitably in the future.
No. Notwithstanding he's a role-model for our off-the-rails youth, we can't rely on our weak justice system to send the message that offending has serious consequences. Instead, we have to rely on his employer taking his career and inflated income stream away to do that. A string of previous convictions and he's only just been jailed now, for Pete's sake!
I'm sure he's sat in his cell contemplating how it's all come to a sudden, crashing end but he's only himself to blame. Can't do the time? Don't do the crime!
if VICK can kill dogs, an get a 2sec chance, guess WIGAN should 2; HOWEVER; the 1st. time HE brakes the law or causes any disturbson,WIGAN should lose the privilige of playing prof. football
Once he's done his time then he's paid his debt to society and should be able to resume working. Whether any club would want to employ him is questionable and I applaud Wigan's chairman for coming out and saying that King will never play for Wigan again.
I heard King's agent on the Headline Hour on Sport on 5 last night and was appalled by his arrogance (and ignorance).
Thought Eleanor handled it superbly (as usual - why oh why isn't she utilised more on 5 Live?)
Sarnia Completely agree with your comments about EO - she is a top broadcaster. Unfortunately she doesn't fit in with the Spoony-type 'celeb' know-nothing presenters that r5live tends to favour - ho-hum! Marlon is a sad and dangerous individual - his agent is both deluded and just as sad. Can it be the killing of his cash cow is really what is behind the agent's concern?
Congratulations to Dave Whelan of Wigan for sacking him.
I wouldn't let him play again, but he is going to. So Marlon King is going to need a lot of rehabilitation before he should have any chance of playing football again.
Surely his jail sentence should be longer, I hope it gets extended on appeal.
The man is clearly an arrogant an ignornant idiot.... Pro Sportsmen and women are in an extrememly priviliged positions and are role models to young people the world over. If Marlon King is ever allowed to resume his Pro football career what message does that send out to the youth on the streets, many of whom are already borderline feral. The offence commited by Marlon King was despicable and utterly cowardly, and he was lucky to get such a leniant sentence,(of which he will be out in less than half of it). He should be using the next 9 months in jail to reflect and come down to earth. As an ex Prison officer myself I would love to see the outcome if he demanded extra priviliges using the phrase "don't you know who I am" !!
Of course he should be allowed to play again , you cant take away somebody's rights , but i dont want him ever employed by anyone. Its a great job to have playing football and if you employ this person ( i cant call him a man ) then you associate yourself with him , plus as he's on the sex offenders register i dont think he should be around kids
18 months not long enough! Should have got minimum 5yrs with no parole chances, especially with his history. Sacked from football too and should never be allowed to play again. We can do withouth this scum in football. In fact if he can be this violent, get him to join the army send him to afghanistahn so one of our real men, a real soldier can come home. If any other football club employ this piece of rubbish again when he gets out (and let's face it with our justice system it's likely to be 6 months not 18), the fans should boycott the club. If they go watch him play should he get signed, then in my view every fan that goes to watch him, supports what he did to that poor unfortunate girl and should hold thier heads in shame.
Thoroughly nasty man and IMO shouldn't play professional football ever again. He obviously hasn't learned any lessons from his numerous previous convictions.
Victoria...regarding the question of role models...footballers, singers, often folk I've never heard of...all those "celebrities" are role models and King, like many others, do not take on the responsibility that goes with the kudos. We are all role models in our own lives. The difference is that if we mess up then we are punished and made an example of as a warning to others, celebrities and the rich in general can employ the best barristers who can convince judges that wrong is, in fact, right. Stuart.
Marlon King is obviously a scumbag. However he is in the company of Jonathon Woodgate, Lee Bowyer, Joey Barton, Craig Bellamy, Jermaine Pennant. Who are also very nasty pieces of work but have been able to continue their careers. The FA should consider the privileged position of highly paid professional footballers bringing the game into disrepute - perhaps any player convicted of a violent offence should be subject to a lengthy ban ? On a separate note - while what Marlon King did to this young woman is clearly wrong should people be talkng about him not being allowed to work with children once he has served his sentence ? Surely there should be different levels of sex offender registration that seperates this type of offence from that of the recently convicted Scottish paedophiles.
Marlon King is NOT a role model for anyone, never has been never will be, so please those of you who think he will affect youngsters, please be re-assured. However this constant coverage, in half term, may have a negative effect, especially to 'types' like the ten year old that swung his golf club at my car whilst I drove passed him. (mind you he is probably already 'there')
And I agree with Sarnia and Nelly (if I may be so bold as to abbreviate your name!) Eleanor is a fine presenter, who keeps her football preferences to herself unlike many others on 5live!! (in other words, a professional)
This man clearly has serious issues with anger, self control and his attitudes towards women. One fears for his wife and children. Whilst in prison he must be helped to recognise his problems and accept responsibility for changing himself- probably years of work needed. As long as he does this I see no problem with him earning a living as a footballer. But he must also accept his card is well and truly marked.
Entirely agree with the comments about Eleanor Oldroyd.I used to love her sunday afternoon show.A gem of a radio broadcaster by a country mile compared to some on 5live.
This supposed role model has been in trouble for the same sort of thing before and obviously see's women as an easy touch, he's married as well which says a lot for his respect of his wife, also I think the sentence is pathetic considering he has shown no remorse, forget he's a footballer he's under the same law as us, isn't he? and that is where we differ from the judiciary they seem to wrap these so called celebrities in cotton wool, that is not what I call democracy, take his livelihood off him perhaps he'll stop taking it for granted then, a lot of players with a lot more respect and ability would give their high teeth to play at his level.
This inconsiderate idiot obviously takes his privileged position for granted, their are thousands of talented players who have not had his chance in the game, and they would love the opportunity, he obviously has no respect for the game or our laws or his wife, he does not seem to understand that the laws include him too, the sentence is pathetic considering what he did and he will do it again,I hope his career is over! perhaps that will teach him some respect for women.I presume this 18 months will mean him being out in nine months, that's justice isn't it! I hope the impending Tory government sort the law out, it's in a mess!
i think he will be given another chance, regrettably. wigan are doing the right thing in terminating his contract, but i think it reflects more on the cult of celebrity where these people think that they can and do whatever they want and will get away with it. his previous history of violence proves that finally he has got what he deserves. having previously stated in a court hearing that he was in drug rehab, and just recently saying that he'd never taken drugs should now be prosecuted for purjury.
With certain jobs come certain responsibilities, whether you like it or not.
Answer me this.
If a doctor was convicted of a sexual assault what would happen?
He would be struck off the medical register, and unable to practice any more. Even if he were the most able doctor and truly repentant, the outcome would be the same. Because doctors have a responsibility of trust to the communities they serve.
The situation is not in any way the same, but has many similarities.
Marlon King might be able to score goals, but with his job, comes a career in the media spotlight, and therefore he has a responsibility as a role model(especially to the youth of his current team) and should conduct himself accordingly. Whether this media exposure is unfair or not is unimportant. It's reality.
A sexual assault and an assault on a woman, plus myriad other criminal convictions means this man is not fit to be in the media spotlight, and he certainly shouldn't be playing at the highest level of the game, where he is exposed to young people who look up to footballers.
On top of his custodial sentence, this guy needs to be hit with a massive fine / private prosecution and an unskilled job prospect to look forward to for his future.
Most employers won't take ex-cons that have been sent down for violent and sexual crimes on as employees - why should premiership football clubs be different, especially in an industry which is trying to play down its synonymity with violence and hooliganism.
You can't even get an apartment in the USA if you're a felon, let alone a job! We give higher sentances for animal abuse! Shame on your criminal justice system and you Football mentality.
I am all for second chances, but by the sound of it this guy has had multiple chances. I think it is true that anything short of a long or life ban is going to make kids think they could get away with this kind of behaviour in life. For sure if they do let him back and he does something as disgusting as this again, they have to ban him. What kind of message does it send out that you get banned for taking steroids, but punching people, especially women, in the face is okay?
In perspective, he may have a criminal past, but ultimately he is a football player! he may have done wrong but he serves his time in prison in recompense of this.
The public do not have the right to have an opinion on whether he is a good role model or not, especially the lady who did get punched in the face. Prison was his punishment for that parcticular offence. End of the ladys story.
Football seems to be the only sport in which 100% clean bill of health in respect of personal matters, dereives if you can play the sport you love at a high level. musicians do drugs e.g. Robbie Williams however there isnt a debate on whether he can feature on X Factor or BBC's Electric Balls Room, as he surely isnt a role model...
No! Give someone more deserving a chance of success in the sport. Thugs like this do not deserve what they have. Let him stack shelves at a supermarket by all means.
I really can't stand this, "paid his debt to society" rubbish. He is jailed as PUNISHMENT and in this case rather on a rather too lenient basis. This man is an animal from whom the public should be permanently protected. As to a football club signing him again, this notion just proves that football is about nothing more than money. And deathshadow2, I don't recall Robbie Williams ever beating up any woman to her disfigurement.
This is disgusting, it shouldn't even need asking.
The man might be an outstanding footballer, but it makes no difference, the crime he commited was heinous and was not a 'first offence', he should be banned for life and either imprisoned, or extradited, no one wants people like him around, 'talented' or not.
It's shocking that we live in a society in which it is seen as acceptable for those with wealth and celebrity to behave outside the laws that apply to the rest of society. In recent years a number of 'celebrities' have been publicised for treating other human beings appallingly and been forgiven for their behaviour, it is morally indefensible, and it sends out the wrong message. 'Celebrity' status should only be retained by those who can demonstrate a suitable level of behaviour, those who can be held up as 'role models' for others. Any who can not should be banned from public appearances, press reports, and professions in which they get rewarded with any time in the public eye.
He'll probably only be inside for 8 months. He's got thirteen previous convictions. So much for our so called " justice" system ! Unless he learns to control his anger he will probably strike again. ( pun intended) And I bet wifey will stick by him. I wouldn't trust him with a barge pole. But I bet he'll go on to earn a few million more. He's a scumbag.
I just read the article and i'm completely baffled by the sympathetic outpouring by Gordon Tayor about poor Marlin's future! Who the hell is going to help the poor 20 year old 5ft tall girl who's face he smashed. It seems to me these people are only interested in money. I suggest they lock the bully boy up and throw away the key!
As a football fan, I'm disgusted by the sympathetic attitude of Gordon Taylor to the King case. Marlon King is not a footballer, he's a thug who gets paid to play football. There should be no place for him anywhere in the professional game anywhere in the UK (unfortunately he will always have the chance of disappearing off to somewhere to ply his trade). Maybe it's about time that clubs who are spending vast amounts of money on players introduced morality clauses into contracts to make sure that the few overpaid ego-inflated idiots like Marlon King are reined in. I hope Miss Carr now takes him to the cleaners when he gets released, as obviously from his 13 previous convictions (and his defence counsel's protestations about loss of earnings), the only way to stop him is to hit him where it hurts....in the pocket.
Why does King being a footballer come into it. He has committed a crime and been punished, nothing to do with football, end of. If it were a builder would his "profession" be mentioned ?. Do not get me wrong I do not condone what he did for a minute.
He said he was a multi-millionaire, and he should be fined multi-millions (I know that was probably just a boast). Massive fines would be a massive deterrent for people who think they can get away with it, and that way they can pay for their accommodation (prison) rather than the tax payer. Let me be clear that is massive fine and prison, not an alternative.
There is too much money in Premiership Football and it breeds poor role models.
he has committed a crime, he is serving time. get over it.
playing football is his obligation and no one (as the FA have already pointed out) has the ability to take that away from him especially when it concerns a non football matter.
He was naive and foolish, and his agent is perceived as arrogant but is correct when he DOES play football again there will be plenty of teams that will look at him and give him the oppotunity to play football again.
and a massive fine is pointless, due to the fact, if i punched someone in the face i wouldnt be expected to pay 1 million pound in damages for the same offence. so surely punishments should be given according to the offence not who you are.
how come everyone is talking about this low-life socalled sportsman? the poor woman is scarred for life! he should never ever be allowed to play again - he is not a sportsman - but a bully! something is completely wrong in society - when we can reward idiots like him - and then put him forward as an icon - to young people! even after having served his well deserved sentence - no way should he be rewarded back into play! the woman should be heavily rewarded financially from his apparent multi-million pound fortune!
Following more in-depth research on this story; I would not ever give him an another chance to played every again...For his participation...In the crime!
Unfortunately people who commit these crimes, especially sex crimes, do not change, maybe cannot change. He has been convicted 13 times previously for similar behavior. I pity his wife.
did she provoke him?..i wonder how arsene wenger would feel gettin his nose smashed in!? that was completely out of hand not to mention extremely violent against someone 'way out of his league'..so arrogant to use your status in such a way..he needs to do proper time for his crimes and show a change, thereafter should be able to continue with his job though not at wigan..
King is a monster. He thought his wealth entitled him to assault that woman. When she complained, he attacked her viciously.
We need footballers and all other sports-persons to be positive role models. Little wonder many kids who adore people like King grow up to be thugs, wife beaters and monsters.
The FA need to treat behaviour like this as completely unacceptable. A life ban is the only answer to get the message over.
Only then will footballers begin to learn how to behave. If not they will be finished.
All repeat criminals take note.Do not despair on release from prison if you want a high paying job.Just apply to the Professional Footballers Association where you will be welcomed with open arms no matter how many offences you have committed.
No, no second chance for King. As a footballer he is in the public eye and should set an example to the youth who follow football. He used his over inflated ego and wallet as an excuse to beat a young woman for defending herself against his unwanted attention. With 13 previous offences, 18 months is a lenient sentence in my opinion. The FA need to take a firm stand and make it clear that violence in any form is not acceptable and set a life ban. King is a disgrace... I hope prison is a steep learning curve for him and if he is a multi millionaire then he should pay for his keep while he is in there too.
King has had his second chance. How many incidents get as far as court, let alone as far as conviction?
Fourteen chances is more than enough. He is an unrepentant, serial violent thug.
If a life ban doesn't happen, it says a great deal about the Professional Footballers' Association; Premier League; The Football Association and the TV companies who pay for thugs like King.

Nellysmydogsname - glad someone else shares my opinion of Eleanor.
I thought it was a real shame that she was ousted out of Sunday afternoon's Sport on 5 to be replaced by 'trendy' Colin Murray.
Eleanor has a good basic knowledge of all sports; has a wonderful radio voice; and comes across as an intelligent and warm person.
I really enjoyed listening to her and Clare Balding discussing the various headlines of the (sporting) day last night.
Their well modulated and non-hyper approach is just so, well, grown-up.

He's a scumbag.

why not then just put him in prison for life... to protect society, does society need protecting? really?

He has committed a crime
and been punished, nothing to do with football, end of.
