Do you support cuts in public spending?

Victoria Derbyshire | 09:23 UK time, Monday, 14 September 2009

This morning we'll bring you live the speech of Brendan Barber head of the TUC, and that of Peter Mandelson at the London School of Economics.

Plus we'll talk to one of the country's leading fertility experts about women who risk death and bankruptcy in their desperation to become mothers.

And in the Monday music review: Bananarama join us to talk about their new album.

Re: the Fertility Expert. I hate it when women are referred to as 'ladies' - men are referred to as men so please use the term 'women'. Saying 'ladies' is on a par with serviettes and toilet. :-)

When i was in financial trouble i identified what was essential spending and then viciously cut the rest. It worked and i am a long way down the road to recovery. If we don't do this as a nation, we will bw saddled with debts for generations that will stifle our chance to rebuild a wealthy and vibrant economy and provide opportunities for those that wish to take them.
Wouldn't it be great if we could get a Govt pragmatic enough to second some talent from well run private companies to show the Civil Service how it is done for a lot less.

I admire you beachball64. Sadly my friend took another route. Her and hubby had stuck their heads in the sand and eventually realised that they were overspending by £500 a month. So what did they do, encouraged by others that 'do it too'. Family tax credits. They are now the proud owners of £4160 a year courtesy of the taxpayer (as well as the £1726 child benefits they already get)

Are they poor and needy? You decide. They live in a large converted part of a Victorian house, holiday abroad 3 times a year, rent a beach hut at £5000 a year, own a speedboat, half a share in a plane, a classic car, as well as a car each, have gym and tennis membership, the kids have private extra tuition and sports training, have converted their attic space to two extra bedrooms (which they rent out at a very high rate) own a flat in London (also rented out). They wouldn't consider giving anything up or working extra hours to get out of their self inflicted situation. But they don't have to as this feckless government is happy to buy their votes at the expense of the ungreedy taxpayer.

This is the benefit handout that SHOULD be being discussed by 5 Live, but they choose to consistently ignore it. I believe in helping those that need it, but they and many millions of others don't.

The thing that makes me extra sick, is I believe the single persons state pension is £4160 - their handout from the government.

Oh well, maybe they'll lend us the beach hut.
