Anonymous until proven guilty?

Louisa Compton | 10:37 UK time, Wednesday, 26 August 2009

Lewis Linford

This morning Victoria is talking to the former Emmerdale actor Lewis Linford, left, who was cleared of sexual assault by a jury in just 7 minutes earlier this week.

He's another high profile defendant in a sexual assault case who wants anonymity for men until and unless they are convicted.

Also, after the the hooliganism at last night's West Ham v Millwall match, we'll find out what happened to those who caused trouble between Hull and Millwall in their FA cup game last January - were they banned for life from football?

Why weren't we saying back in January that football seems to have returned to the dark days? Shouldn't a Carling Cup match between West Ham and Millwall be played in daylight on a Sunday morning? Why not ban away fans from high profile notorious games like this?

This must have taken much soul searching Victoria broadcasting this item too air on your show.Normally all we get is the usual men bashing, feminist agenda features.

Anyway it was a pleasant change and of course no one should be identified before a case of this kind has been judged and concluded.I cannot understand why a man is named anyway ? An absolutely deplorable idea.I am quite sure if a woman was named in a such a way the feminists would soon be breathing their fire and brimstone.

This should have appeared before your show or at the beginning.

I wanted to comment on the Lewis Linford story but up until two hours into your programme this page had not been updated and still had the previous day's topic.

Congratulation to Lewis for finally being cleared by a jury of an seemingly obvious unsupportable accusation. But the point I would like to air is real justice failed for the accused as he had to endure TWENTY MONTHS before his case and his opportunity for justice to be heard. This is a major failing of the current British system of justice in the extraordinary length of time between being charged with an offence and the case being heard in court. The length of time lapse must call into question the accuracy of some of the evidence given in court.

Where and why are there such a delays? The effect of a court case hanging over for a lengthy period must be horrendous to a lot more than just the accused. Real justice with the opportunity to hear more accurate evidence presented would need the length of time to be reduced considerably between being charged and a court date.

Victoria where is the bottle neck in the justice system, Prosecution, Courts, Police, bureaucracy, resources get your researchers or from other sources available to the BBC to give some answers. A lot of effort went into reducing the hospital waiting times time the Justice System needs a similar effort for the benefit of the public to quickly clear the innocent and remove the guilty from causing any more harm.
