What is GBL?

Victoria Derbyshire | 09:14 AM, Wednesday, 13 May 2009

It's the new drug of choice for clubbers in Britain - and it's dangerous. It's actually an industrial cleaner used among other things to strip paint and remove graffiti. Yet it's not illegal to take it in this country. It's been banned in America, Canada and Sweden. On the programme at ten we'll hear from 2 people who've taken GBL, what effect it has on them and whether it would make any difference if the government banned it.

Plus we'll bring together the Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik and the Assistant Editor of the Daily Telegraph to discuss expenses.

UPDATE: Have a listen back to the interview below:

Even in magazines for these communities the cover of glamour mags show exclusively light skin in asian magazines and very few dark skin.

It dates from the period of slavery when light skin slaves were chosen for house duties (perhaps the offspring or the slave owner) and the dark skin slave were kept out in the field.

Couldn't get away with that claim so installed the already purchased TV in his main home and bought another one on us the taxpayer for the maximum he could claim and then claims this was the system working..................wonder why people think they are in a world of their own.
And to claim a £40 court notice dear me if he had any honour he'd resign.
Then we come to Austin Mitchells wife who has to have two Loo Brushes so its only fair the taxpayer pays for one, and has Grimsby knickers and London knickers, i suppose we should be grateful that she hasn't heard of Suitcases as they can be expensive so she probably saved us a mint on the cost of those. You couldn't make it up

Don't get too het up over this expenses racket Squonk because that's what the British establishment want in preference to people getting het up over far more important issues!

This whole expense debacle is simply a right wing corporate media attack (or even coup) against a pathetically bipartisan right wing dominated Parliament in order to divert public attention away from the failure of 30 odd years of uninterrupted right wing economic policies by the Tories and New Labour!

All these wild expense claims could have come out in the wash months ago but its been put on hold till this recession where a more money conscious electorate will make simple comparisons with the likes of MP's who've always been well rewarded financially. Consequently deeper fundamental deficiencies of the Parliamentary system highlighted by thus recession will be obscured, the main one being that Parliament is utterly impotent anyway in dealing with this crisis of capitalism because the left wing have been completely eclipsed by New Labour!

This expense scandal is a mere reverberation of this far greater political party identity crisis!

Lembit says it all in his responses; he doesn't think he has done any thing wrong and that the system is to blame!

These people have to understand that they are in the public domain and as such are role models who set standards. These are the people who represent us, and set in place the laws of the nation.

I sit as a magistrate and non payment of council tax, benefit fraud and theft carry a jail sentence according to our government sentencing guide lines (agreed by MPs) where the offender is persistent and repeats his or her offending. I would suggest ' In breach of trust' would be a starting point for offences in relation to those MPs who have already cheated and would have continued to offend if they hadn't been exposed.

We are now faced with a total distrust of the political system by the general public and a golden opportunity has been given to the extreme parties to gain votes. A shame on these MPs!

I guess you were the bloke 'attempting' to make his point on Nicky's programme this morning. I say attempt because you didn't seem to be able to convince yourself as well as Nicky (and a good deal of the listening audience too, no doubt)

The point is in this whole debacle is that whoever and whatever party they belong to with regard to these questionable expense claims, it's only Labour that have control and can spend the public purse.

And if they treat this relative miniscule taxpayers millions - what the heck are they doing with our BILLIONS.

We know they have squandered billions, (before the banking crisis) and this is what really HURTS the taxpayers pocket!

actually they dont squander they ensure a nice pension plan for when they leave office .

why do you think that certain corps, people manage to secure very well paying contracts .. and all of these wheezes from speed cameras .. enforcement officers on the spot fines .. bailiffs etc get the go ahead ..

the question is as always .. follow the money and who benefits ..

Wendymann, you should have read my post the other day - where I say their mates have benefitted from contracts.

They DO squander massively..... and nothing to do with self serving issues.

Many billions ARE wasted on schemes that the government decide to 'pull' before implementation for example.

Take a look at the taxpayers alliance website.

The thing that made my hair curl was a programme on C4 (which amazingly everyone seemed to miss to my sadness) It was about waste in government spending. The conclusion was the amount of wasted taxpayers money would allow us to be able to have a banking crisis for the next 40 years!

If I can find details of prog I'll post here (if the beeb will allow)

Since mention was made of the topic of house
and field slave I just wanted to note
    that actually this false concept
that so many people have that the
    lighter-complexioned chattel slaves
had it easier or thought they were
    better than the darker-complexioned slaves
and / or relaxed in the big house while
    the darker-complexioned slaves suffered in
the fields is very much like the infamous
Willie Lynch Letter Hoax) all VERY MUCH AN
URBAN MYTH (and is one which, in nearly every
    way thats possible, completely defies
    the true historical recorded account.

    The historical record shows that
those enslaved people who were of a
    lighter-complexion (i.e. mulatto-lineage)
and that were found on the continental
    United States during the antebellum
(chattel slavery) era were actually treated
MUCH, MUCH WORSE than were those enslaved
people who were of a darker-complexion.

In fact, record shows that most of the White
people (specially the White women) tended to
    look upon the lighter-complexioned slaves
as being mere mongrels of miscegenation
(resulting largely from the rapes caused
by overseers); in their disgust at the sight
of these slaves insisted that they be
banished to the fields; and also then
purposefully reserved most of the big
house positions (ex. mammy, cook, driver,
    etc) for the darker-complexioned slaves
who most of the White people perceived as
being more loyal, docile, less competitive
and, equally important, of a skin tone
which could never cause them to be mistaken
for white or a possible member of
    the plantation owners own family.

    And this maltreatment was generally
even much more so the case if the
    lighter-complexioned enslaved person
was suspected (by a wife, sister or
daughter who ran the big house,
while a male family member ran the
    plantation) of possibly being the
    offspring of a plantation owner
(or his son, father or brother).
    In addition, the few lighter-complexioned
enslaved people that were actually permitted
to do any work within the house were as
punishment for having the lowly status of
mongrel and in order to make sure they
did not become too uppity kept under
much more severe supervision (by both the
White women who ran the plantation household
and also by the darker-complexioned enslaved
people) and under much more severe work
detail than were most of the (more trusted)
    darker-complexioned enslaved people.

    Books by Deborah Gray White; Paula Giddings;
    J. California Cooper; bell hooks, etc.
expose the truth about the urban-myth and
show that the lighter slaves received NO
special treatment and were (as mere mongrels
    of miscegenation) usually treated much
    worse than were darker-complexioned slaves.

    Hope this information is helpful
& that everyone has a great day.
