Has a DVD box set ever taken over your life?
Me = Six Feet Under and Sex and the City - on maternity leave waiting for the babba to be born, I could watch episode after episode into the early hours.
Plus we'll talk to a young British man who survived the Mumbai terror attacks last November - by escaping though a window. He's been told he'll never walk again because of injuries sustained when he escaped through their hotel bedroom window; and because he's the victim of a terrorist attack abroad and not in the UK - he can't get the kind of compensation others receive. It's an incredible story - we'll talk to Will, his girlfriend and father at 10.

Get the West Wing box set. it is magnificent.
WARNING; write off two to three months of your life; it is so good that you feel you are being cheated if you are not watching it.
Very sad really but is is THAT good.
However it is my first and last box set since
a) I could not live life like that again
b) I cannot imagine anything ever being so consistently brilliant.

I was given the box set of the first series of The Sopranos (which I am given to understand was excellent television) and various other DVDs but haven't watched a single one as still don't know how to work my DVD machine.

'Has a DVD box set ever taken over your life?'
Obviously not as I'm not a super-sad barstool!
Never really had the need to buy a box-set to be honest as I have Sky TV and the Soprano's was on C4 at a decent time so have been able to catch all the shows I wanted to at the time they were aired.
Will no doubt have to get one now though as the mornons that run the BBC decided to outbid other broadcasters for excellent US drama sereis 'The Wire' and then decied to put it on at either 11.20pm or 12.20am every night of the week so hardly anyone can watch it.......
Unbelivable considering the dumbed down dross that is churned out between 9 and 11.20 all nights of the week on the BBC's 4 available channels. Still we've come to expect massive displays of idiocy like this from the BBC of late so no real suprise.
Bet a wire box set will cost me a fortune - I'll need to get that whole illeagal download thing tested out I think......The BBC TV schedulers turning me to crime......a shocking state of affairs!!

my twin sister and i are complete west wing fanatics - it is so addictive! our husbands have promised for our 40th birthday (in four years unfortunately) they will take care of all our children whilst we go away for a weekend in a luxury hotel and watch all seven series back to back. that has got to be worth turning 40 for...

I wouldn't say they've taken over my life - just my bank account.
I tend to buy American series because I don't have satellite TV (hence the boxed sets of Veronica Mars, The Wire, Brotherhood, Carnivale and Criminal Minds on the shelves) and it means I can watch them at my pace (am currently nearing the end of Sharpe and starting on Lewis, or I can just indulge in nostalgia (which is why Star Trek (original series) is now on order...

Over 20 years ago I worked for Warner Home Video in South Africa. Even then there were concerns about piracy - it is was easy to copy a video, CD etc. An international body was set up (name escapes me) to combat piracy.
20 years later they still have not moved on with the times, be it music, films, videos, whatever.
The film makers are bearing the cost of not taking constructive dialogue with the new distribution networks, particularly the internet whch has been around for a long time now.
Artists, musicians, writers have all lost out due to the industry's intransignce to follow the developments.
Belatedly, they now find that they will have to "cooperate" with the new distribution networks to prevent piracy.
I personally have rebuked family, friends and neighbours for this practice which is wrong. But if you don't go with the flow, you might as well be King Canute.

The X-Files. Must see the whole 9 seasons at least once a year. Followed closely by The Prisoner. I'm retired, so I can.

Sunday mornings without a recorded episode of The West Wing to watch, will be unbearable. So a box set of all seven seasons is top of my shopping list - with the complete Cheers a close second. Other than those two masterpieces - I couldn't care less.

Has a DVD box set ever taken over my life? Yes, on multiple occasions.
As much as i enjoyed watching my favourite TV shows at broadcast pace (usually 1 a week), the dawn of the DVD box set really opened my eyes.
Thanks to some great online offers for older classic TV dramas (The Wire, Sopranos, etc), and the annoyingly easy access to new shows thanks to online dvd rental companies, i've truly drifted away from movies and consider myself a TV show addict.
Take the excellent The Wire, with 5 seasons of episodes to work through, you have months worth of quality drama to watch. The only trouble is, once you've bulldozed through all the favourites, you're left hunting for lesser TV boxsets to try and fill the gaps.
Luckily for me i still have a few TV shows in mind to keep me going.
