Bad losers?

Post categories:

Victoria Derbyshire | 09:23 AM, Thursday, 7 May 2009

apprentice_philip_main.jpgOur theme this morning is losing gracefully. Is it a sign of class or is that just an old-fashioned view? Everyone's talking about the big clash last night: Lorraine v Philip. Did the "big head from Durham" and John Terry-lookalike lose more or less gracefully than Mr Terry and his Chelsea team?

You can listen to Victoria's interview with the "big head from Durham" below

What on earth does this mean?

    Who are Lorraine and Philip?

Why bother to write a blog post that is so brief as to be entirely meaningless?

    Hi Victoria

In case you missed this on your Facebook page...

To lose gracefully, there needs to be another element... and that's justice and fair refereeing. Last night's refereeing was disgraceful. It was bound to get tempers flareing and give a sense of injustice.

I am not a Chelsea supporter... in fact I am a neutral lover of football and the fact is Chelsea last night were robbed by very unfair refereeing.

Having said this... I do not condone the behaviour of some of the players... but I can understand it. When people are treated unfairly, expect a reaction. That is just human nature!

Many of the examples of good losers you have highlighted in your programme this morning, were simply not comparable instances.

    Great programme... as always! xx

    Saludos! :)

I would like to comment on the discussion of the Referee making basic errors in last night's Chelsea v Barca game and as one caller put it denying "People the chance of reaching the pinnacle of their career"

How often has Didier Drogba and others like him cheated and feigned injury on the pitch, and how has this behaviour also denied opponents reaching the pinnacle of their careers and adversely affecting refereeing decisions?

Drogba and players like him including managers and their reaction to refereeing decisions is partly what is wrong with the game of soccer no other sport tolerates the amount of abuse referees are subjected to on and off the pitch and at times the righteous indignation of panellists/experts who form opinions on incidents in games having had the luxury of reviewing replays many times and in slow motion.

No amount of poor decision making from an official during a game excuses the type of aggressive intimidation the referee had to endure last night and it should not be tolerated.

In my opinion Fifa/Uefa are culpable in this and until they decide definitively that technology as in other sports is to be used or not, and if not refeering (human) error should be deemed to be part of the game. Managers and Players alike should be prevented from commenting upon refereeing decisions under pain of sanction.

I would point out that I'm not a referee just concerned at the way my sport is being undermined as a result of cheating, managerial comment and poor decision making, Fifa/Uefa need to get soccer's house in order and above all the officials in the game should be sacrosanct, perhaps now is the time to introduce technology into the game, a word of caution to Mr Drogba and his like though, if this happens you may end up being properly exposed for the frauds that you are.

archicrooks You're absolutely right! Frankly I cannot understand what all the fuss is about. I watched it a couple of times at the beginning and got totally bored. I still ocassionally have a peak wondering whether I'm missing something... only to have my first reaction confirmed. Complete tosh from some very unpleasant 'wannabees' but no idea what they 'wannabees'... but they do know... they 'wannabee' it NOW!

Oh and Carrie... either way... she looks great... dead sexy! ;)

The brass neck of this Labour Politician (Stuart someone?) on your programme at the moment beggars belief!

Totally agree Sarnia, he was called Stuart Bell.

How can he complain about mp's privacy and security when so many of them have lost OUR personal details on left on train laptops, memory sticks etc etc!

And he was talking about fairness!! People should really re-listen to the interview, to hear how they think they should be treated with a different set of rules to us!

But, Victoria, you should have had more teeth in that interview, you were a pussycat and frankly let him get away with it!! Such a missed opportunity.

Agree with you Bee-A-Bee. I would have loved the opportunity to take that man to task myself - instead they're all given an easy ride.

Mandelson was awful earlier - he really laid into Asmah Mir for daring to question him. They shouldn't be allowed to get away with it so easily.

its interesting that the mp's were being given time to sanitize their claims before the official publication in june-july .. im not theyre miffed with the telegraph and the raw data that exposes all.

refer to the bbc reality show the apprentice and all will be revealed (see bbc iplayer)

"can anybody tell me what the hell is a "wetroom""

i believe that it is an entire room that is used as say a walk in shower room .. instead of the traditional bathroom with bath and a shower
