Leaving Iraq

Victoria Derbyshire | 09:16 AM, Thursday, 30 April 2009

I'm listening to the poignant memorial service in Basra as I write while reading some of your comments. As the British mission there draws to a close, troops are remembering soliders who've died there since 2003.

"Thankyou for broadcasting the most touching piece of radio I have ever listened to, it's brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye, I can't express in words the debt of gratitude the world owes the fallen and their families"..Sam in Belfast.

"The memorial service and tribute is very moving. It's at emotional times like this that I feel proud to be British, and very humble at the sacrifices the troops have made. " Tony

"What time are the names of all the Iraqi civilians who died being read out?" asks Adrian in Brighton.

On the programme today the handover from British troops continues, plus Nooral who was sacked from The Apprentice (although last night was ALL about Ben wasn't it?); and what's the most amazing thing your best friend has done for you?

I have just been looking at the casualty list on the BBC website. I think it's so sad to read down the list and see just how young most of these people were and also, very poignantly, the pictures showing them happy and smiling and in family surroundings.

I think the UK government has a lot to answer for with regards to destroying hundreds and possibly thousands of peoples lives as it is the ones who remain that have to attempt to piece together their shattered lives.

The only good thing to come out of this war is that the British have finally seen sense and are leaving, before more lives are lost.

By the way, has anyone thought about creating a similar list for the innocent Iraqi civilians that have been killed?

The loss of som many British lives is tragic, and to our shame, the loss of Iraqi lives is beyond words. Catastrophe is an under statement.

UK deaths of around 180 are all identifiable by name. They have been sacrificed in the course of their duty. They have carried out their orders. Such a waste of young lives, who signed up for a career in the belief they were defending our shores.

Iraqi deaths, according to The Lancet exceed 650,000. Whole families have died. Their mistake was to be living in their own country.

Every British name could be read out in 15 minutes.

Every Iraqi name could be read out in 902 hours. If this was done every day, it would take 112 continuous days .

debt and gratitude? emotions and sentiments surely out of place for a deceitful illegal war.

the patriotic duty of each man woman was to oppose the war not to go and kill innocent iraiqa.

lets not forget that the estimated 1 million dead are above the numbers the iraqi population might have lost under saddam regime.

and now off we go to war in afghansitan and pakistan .. and still blaming islam and muslims for our lies.

So who was to blame for the twin towers wendyman or is that another example of our lies.
I find the fact that you people have to try dance on the graves of the fallen soldiers disgraceful i was against the war in Iraq ( NOT AFGHANISTAN) but am intelligent enough to be able to divorce the sacrifice of the fallen from the lying politicians that sent them to their deaths on the back of a lie.
    Have some compassion for once.
