When it's snow, you let us know

Lou Birt - Programme Editor | 10:41 AM, Monday, 2 February 2009

If it's not snowing where you are, you're probably wondering what all the fuss is about.

Snow in the UK, 02 Feb 2009Whenever the weather takes a turn for the worse, you're first to let us know.

Here's just a small fraction of what you've been telling us about the weather where you are, all of which helps inform what we're doing on air:

brixton_brighton.jpg
"This was our garden in Brixton this morning..." from Lizzie and "Brighton this morning At least someone enjoying the snow!" from Martin.

"This is fantastic listening to all the wingers complaining about the snow, it,s the most beutifull day here in mid Devon, not a cloud in the sky and gorg eous sunshine, take the day off and enjoy your life we don,t get snow very often." - PHIL.

"At christmas with no snow insight our council was gritting the roads this weekend despite 3 days warning not a gritter lorry to be seen Why?" - Dave Lewis

"Light covering of snow earlier today but sunny and blue sky now. Should be ok for sailing season! Stuart, Weymouth."

"These stupid 'townies' who complain about the services not keeping the roads/railways open have no idea about the weather in their centrally heated lives."

For our travel reporter Helen Blaby, you're an invaluable source of information when the weather is like this:

"We knew it was coming, I had a conversation with the weather team at the end of the last week and so was fairly prepared for heavy snow. I don't think I was expecting it to be this bad though. Having left home in Northampton at about 4 this morning to a light dusting, I was completely surprised by the depth of the snow outside Euston station, which might explain why I went base over apex at the bottom of the stairs.

Anyway, what's the job like when it's like this? Well, I'll say one thing and that's the time goes very quickly indeed. Trying to get all the information I need is a challenge, and that's where you come in to your own. Police control rooms and the Highways Agency are too busy to talk to me on mornings like this, so I really appreciate your texts and emails.

I'm very lucky to have Nick Duncalf in with me this morning as well, as someone said you know the weather's bad when he appears on the Breakfast TV sofa. He's going to keep doing the telly this afternoon, and I'm going to stay on 5 live through until the end of the Drive programme, so please do keep your updates coming either to 08700 100500 or text on 85058 (obviously only if it's safe and legal to do so!)"

Here's a selection of some of the great pictures of the snow in your area. Always good to see a snowman or two.

Please everyone stop moaning and complaining. Why in Britain do we have to be so negative??? Of course buses and trains are struggling - we have extreme weather occuring! Even, as an example, Zurich airport closes when the snow gets too bad!

The moaners would be moaning even more if they were on a bus that skided and crashed!!!

I smiled when I looked out of the window - the rare snow is a cheering sight - and that coming from somoene who has lived in the Alps!

The kids cheered when they discovered the school was closed and we went out and built snowmen.

Forget work, stop moaning, enjoy the snow!!!!

And please please BBC - stop airing news items of people whinging and moaning at Heathrow etc - why don't you broadcast interviews with kids laughing and snowballing in the street

And - lazy journalism - the BBC reporter at Stanstead just had a woman from Madrid moaning about the airport situation - Her own airport was closed 3 weeks ago for the same reason...!! we are not used to it...

why why why are we being so negative!!!!!!!

You can hear the Nogs, Swedes, Finns, Canadians and Northern States of the US laughing from here.

Incidentally, Minus temperatures and heavy snow in Jockoland. But we're used to it. Serves us right for living up here.

    Snow isn't news.

    This is news.

The economy is not doing very well really.

Nobody can afford to heat their houses.

21 families will be put out on the streets today as their houses are reposessed.

We are all up that well-known excremetal waterway without a propulsion device.

I love 5live dearly but when you start banging on about a bit of snow you get right on my tartan chesty bits.

Slainte, and everybody in the sarf, wrap up warm now.
